Manilow is a Romulan!!

As we all know, Enterprise had a pop song for a main-title theme. While on the subject of that? Before Enterprise debuted and they were only showing previews of the show, they played another song by a group, I think, called The Calling. I thought this song, if that was the way they were going, SHOULD have been the theme song. I actually went out and got that CD of theirs and I am an old fart, heck look at the title of this thread.

So, back on topic. What if that hadn't had been the only 'vocal' theme song for a Trek show? Based on the music of the time (so this will require a bit more thought) what song of the time would have been a good vocal theme song? yes, I know most of are probably against vocal theme songs for TREk, but this is a what if....

What if Star Trek(s) TOS-TNG-DS9-Voyager had vocal theme songs..what would they have been. Just on caviat!! No Jackson Five or Donny Osmond songs!!!

Beyond the rim of the star-light
My love is wand'ring in star-flight
I know he'll find in star-clustered reaches
Love, strange love a star woman teaches
I know his journey ends never
His star trek will go on forever
But tell him while he wanders his starry sea
Remember, remember me

"Wherever You May Go" - The Calling

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUV7GBjaYr4

So lately, been wondering
Who will be there to take my place
When I'm gone you'll need love
To light the shadows on your face
If a great wave shall fall and fall upon us all
Then between the sand and stone
Could you make it on your own

If I could, then I would
I'll go wherever you will go
Way up high or down low
I'll go wherever you will go

And maybe, I'll find out
A way to make it back someday
To watch you, to guide you
Through the darkest of your days
If a great wave shall fall and fall upon us all
Then I hope there's someone out there
Who can bring me back to you

If I could, then I would
I'll go wherever you will go
Way up high or down low
I'll go wherever you will go

Run away with my heart
Run away with my hope
Run away with my love

I know now, just quite how
My life and love might still go on
In your heart, in your mind
I'll stay with you for all of time

If I could, then I would
I'll go wherever you will go
Way up high or down low
I'll go wherever you will go

If I could turn back time
I'll go wherever you will go
If I could make you mine
I'll go wherever you will go
I'll go wherever you will go

^God, I hate that song :)

But that's not why I'm posting. I remember, before Enterprise premiered, UPN's campaign blitz for the show featured clips from Broken Bow and I think a bit of Season 1, with the ads playing to that song by The Calling. I hated the song then, but I thought it was a neat way to mix Trek with pop music.

Well. I disagree. I liked the song, and thought it was far better than the song they ended up with, which actually came from the movie Patch Adams. If they had to use a pop song then this song by the calling was perfect..

In fact, it also turned up on an episode of Smallville, and I like it then too. The rest of the album was so/so.

When does someone start singing this song? After shatner says TO BOLDLY GO WHERE NO MAN HAS GONE BEFORE? or is it sung at the start, minus Kirk's intro??? Maybe DAVID COOK could do it next week on American Idol!

When does someone start singing this song?
Never, if we're lucky. Besides being lame, the lyrics don't work with the music.
"Roddenberry's lyrics totally lacked musical practicality. He made two very serious errors in writing the lyrics. One, he changed the shape of the melody by adding extra beats, and two, he used a closed vowel with a z-z-z-z-z sound on the highest notes, something that gives great problems to singers."
