The Maple Leaf Lounge

So I figured I'd try this out to see where it goes. The recent Kathleen Wynne thread seemed to show there was at least some interest in discussing topics specific to Canada, and that thread has branched out into other Canadian-related topics. The Australians have an ongoing general thread, so I figured why not one for Canada too?

So this thread is here for Canadians (or others) to get together and discuss topics specific to our country: Canadian politics, Canadian issues, Canadian celebrities... whatever!

The name is just something I picked, but it doesn't have to be permanent. If you have a suggestion that you'd prefer instead, feel free to share it! I can change the title later if there's another one people would rather have.

So, welcome! Come on in, help yourself to some TimBits, and make yourself at home! :D

Hello,

I guess I am a few years late in regards with a reply but I am Canadian and just wanted to reach out and say hi.

Another thing about The Bay - was mentioned on Global News last night while the company dates back to the 17th century, it hasn't been Canadian owned for 20 odd years.

Yeah, that was disappointing to hear, but not entirely surprising given the state of most Canadian stores. In the future, I think we need to do a better job of keeping things Canadian.

I still think it has the opportunity to get spun off into a Canadian online-only store due to its history.

Rebrand The Bay as Canada's answer to Amazon? Hey, it's already named after a body of water.

Heh, I hadn't even thought of that, but yes. I think with the company's ties to trading, it makes sense. They should first sell it back to Canadian investors and maybe rebrand themselves back to their full name: Hudson's Bay Trading Company.

It certainly feels weird to put so much faith in to Doug Ford, but here we are. Say what you will about him, and I've said a lot, but he does seem to genuinely care about the Canadian worker. If he manages to somehow tone down this trade war, even I might actually vote for him.

Yeah, if anything, I've been really impressed at how he's gone to bat for us. He and Charlie Angus feel like they've been the most vocal throughout this.

The result of the D.C meeting has him feeling hopeful that the temperature will go down.

CBC said:
Ontario Premier Doug Ford and federal officials left an hours-long meeting with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick saying they feel more positive about the Canada-U.S. trading relationship after weeks of bad blood and heated rhetoric.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Ford said he feels like "the temperature is being lowered, the temperature's coming down" after the bilateral talks.

"This, I can honestly say, was the best meeting I've ever had coming down here. We want the best outcome for both countries. We're like a family — sometimes there's tension between families but that was an extremely productive meeting. I'm feeling positive," he said.

Trump of course is still being Trump, no surprise there. Someone's got to tell him the rhetoric really isn't helping.

From The Onion.... :D

How Canadians Are Fighting Back Against U.S. Tariffs

As the trade war heats up, Canada has imposed 25% retaliatory tariffs on billions of dollars of U.S. goods. Here are all the other ways Canada is fighting back:

Dramatically paring back supply of fictional girlfriends

Going shelf to shelf to boo imported American groceries

Selling us syrup from their worst-tasting maple trees

Aiming all snowblowers in direction of U.S. border

Raising legal drinking age to 37 for American tourists

Whittling their own Big Macs

Boycotting Canadian vacation hubs like Oshkosh and Duluth

Activating Dan Aykroyd

Not letting in any draft dodgers next year

--------

The one about the Big Macs is my favorite.

You could build a new version of The Odd Couple around Ford and Angus if you were both careful and lucky.

To let a Canadian institution lapse due to American mismanagement is almost unforgivable. This should be the moment where Canadian investors snatch it up to retool it. It feels emblematic of our current trade war situation.

so we're looking at election day even of April/first week of May.

sadly it looks like my riding will keep the utter waste of space that is our current MP though it's not helped by the liberals not having selected the candidate (and are blaming the federal party).

poilievre asked ford for help and advice and was told nope - too busy.

He's kind of sounding a little desperate.

I can just imagine he saw how Ford was dealing with Trump and the trade war and said, "Help me, please! I have no idea what I'm doing. Tell me how to deal with Trump! He doesn't even like me!"

Looks like our new PM will be running in my riding.

Congratulations! I honestly thought he was going to go with an Edmonton riding, but I can see why they might want to go with somewhere a little more safe. Winning in Edmonton would have been better for western representation, but I guess it would be pretty embarrassing if the party leader ended up losing. (Hi, Bonnie!)

Speaking of embarrassing, though... I watched the video at the end of your linked article, with Carney and Mike Myers. So much cringe. Not only was the "acting" terrible (and I don't even know how that's possible in Myers' case), but the whole idea of some kind of Canadian "purity" test is really a turn off, especially after reading about what happened to the MacDonald sisters. Not to mention that Carney's not exactly in a position where he should be questioning anybody else's Canadian bona fides.

Carney's really going to have to get it together for the campaign. The Liberals are on an upswing now, but as we've seen, things can turn around quickly. It's probably a good thing that the campaign is going to be the shortest possible allowed by law.
