Discovery officially renewed for Season 4

How can they justify the expense when there aren't even numbers for the third season yet? Where can we see how many people are watching?

I can’t figure out if you’re serious or not...

but Discovery was already renewed a long time ago for season 4, only now it’s officially announced. Its “numbers” have been so good that not only does it keep getting renewed but more and more Star Trek spin-offs keep getting produced. Also, no streaming service ever publicizes the numbers of people who watch their shows. But considering Discovery has one of the highest per episode budgets of any show currently on the air, I’d say it’s doing pretty well for it to still be profitable.

So there you have it: despite the long-winded rumors of the show’s demise — including one laughably-ludicrous, oft-repeated tale of the show being cancelled and its sets destroyed (all in secret, of course) Discovery is going to keep on flying ahead for the foreseeable future.
I guess I missed that one.

Yeah, we're likely never going to see the numbers from any of the streaming services. There's no need for them to make them public; there's no need for us to know.

The only thing that I've seen is a projection of 16 million subscribers by year's end.

Ultimately, the execs at ViacomCBS are obviously happy with what Star Trek is doing. Is it Star Wars big? No, but Star Trek never has been. But it's doing well enough though to keep making shows, and spending upwards of 10 million dollars an episode while doing so.

Anyway, yay for Discovery.

I know this gets asked a lot, but the answer is Star Trek Discovery has always been in profit since its deal with Netflix. It was a 3 year renewable deal. It gets great numbers in many of the 188 countries on Netflix, so Netflix has no problem paying up.

CBS also reported its subscribers were up 74% year-over-year.

CBS also gets data from data crunching sites like Parrot, Analytics and a few other more obscure ones in lieu of Neilsons.

Obviously there are no ratings as such, but they know how many people are watching it.

I looked at the viewer data on TVTime, and 2/3rd of the viewers did not watch it on CBSAA. So there are in fact probably 3 times as many eyeballs watching it as is accounted for by direct streaming.

Finally, Trek is a huge money maker for ViacomCBS period.. Discovery has increased merchandise sales from $145 to 182 million in just 3 years. Streaming is the only arm of the company that's expanding.

So glad to get an official announcement.

I thought all this was already official. Whatever, nice to know all the same.
Somebody posted a photo of a sign saying it was the Discovery set, but I believe I posted a list of start dates, one of which said November on it. That sign was probably there in readiness for the cast. I believe at least some of the cast is already in quarantine as Canada is having a Covid falareup and they'll have to shoot in a "bubble".

Any other "unofficial" mention was most likely legit, obviously if it Came from Kurtzman it was, but this is simply an "official" announcement.

I hope season 3 is great. The premiere was a little more quieter than I would have liked but it does set up an intriguing premise.

This was one of worst kept secrets ever.

I think CBS AA planned Picard S2 to be the next series they would show. Now Lower Decks S2 is probably the next available show followed by Discovery S4.
