Terrible movies with awesome soundtracks/scores

I love soundtracks. They are the classical music of today with the added bonus of bringing back memories of fantastic movies. They range from the outstanding such as 'Time' and 'Mombasa' from the equally outstanding Inception (Hans Zimmer), the brash, but enjoyable OST to the equally enjoyable MI:2 (Hans Zimmer, again) and, of course John Williams legendary 'Jurassic Park'.

However the effort of many composers goes unnoticed because of the quality of the film. A bad movie or critically reviled movie can result in the soundtrack being ignored. An example of this is Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. In another thread, called Transformers the worst movies ever. This I stand by - however the movie is not a total loss as Steve Jablonskys' OST is, I think, brilliant from 'Battle' to 'Our Final Hope' to 'Its Our Fight'

Can any other Trekbss'ers think of any wonderful, forgotten soundtracks hidden by the terribleness of the film it was attached to?

Oh, so many. But I don't want to spend too long looking up samples, so...

"Damnation Alley"
By: Jerry Goldsmith
(released months ago, finally, by Intrada Records)

David Arnold is always great, although that's not as good as his Stargate overture.

While I thought the movie was lame, I loved the soundtrack for Johnny English, although more for the songs than the instrumental stuff.

George Lucas' much maligned Star Wars prequels are, IMO, salvaged by some of the greatest work of John Williams' career. "Duel of the Fates" & "Across the Stars" are my 2 favorite things that he's ever done.

The godawful 1976 version of King Kong. John Barry's beautiful score deserved a better movie.

TRON: Legacy - not actually a terrible film per se but it added nothing much to the original apart from modern (for 8 years ago) CGI. The Daft Punk soundtrack is awesome though....

I'd agree with all that. I think John Williams work improved as he went along, his earlier scores tend to sound very similar to his influences (Holst, Tchaikovsky, etc.). His later work, particularly after 'Jurassic Park' was both more original and frequently more relevant to the movie. 'Duel of the Fates' would be my third favorite movie track after 'Jurassic Park' and Hans Zimmers 'Time'.

Purple Rain. This is a really suck-ass, B-grade movie with wonderful music and great band performances.
Maximum Overdrive. Horrible schlock movie with AC/DC soundtrack.

I hadn't considered vanity movies by musicians when I started the thread, thinking more of the traditional type of soundtrack. I suppose this means Michael Jacksons 'Moonwalker', the Monkees 'Head' and the Beatles 'Yellow Submarine' all answer my original question as well.

This is one of the most played tracks on my iPod! I'm surprised that given the wave of 80s nostalgia remakes that are currently underway, Flash Gordon hasn't been a considered option. Maybe they know they can't improve on perfection!
"Dispatch war-rocket Ajax to bring back his body!" - One of the all time great movie lines (certainty the best one delivered in a fake Russian accent).

Soundtrack CDs I listen to of films that many people don't rate...

The Saint (Val Kilmer), Who's That Girl, Madonna, Titan AE although personally I love the Titan AE movie.

I like Iron Man 2! The weakest of the three, but still good!

Perhaps the thread title should have been 'Critically panned and financially-underperforming movies with awesome soundtracks/scores'

Have you seen the 2007 TV series? Enough said!

I’m going to put the 1966 Batman movie on here. It’s one of those it’s so bad that it’s good movies—-and I realize that they were going for campy, but the “Batman” theme song by Nelson Riddle (and I have no idea if he’s related to The Riddler) is still great.

I always really liked the soundtrack from the Josie and the Pussycats film.

Also Queen saved Highlander from being a borderline terrible film
