This is terrible news (I know there are bigger things going on today, and no disrespect intended).

I have been a huge Tom Petty fan since I was a young teenager. He is an American Classic, a real rock and roll star.

Come on, Tom. Pull through.

WHAT?! Jesus Christ, Tom Petty gone? I can't believe it. Great songwriter, great band, great performer, seen him many times. Loved him on King of the Hill. This sucks.

He was also on It's Garry Shandling's Show a bunch of times and The Larry Sanders Show, and now he and Shandling are both gone at 66? I'd never have guessed it.

US rocker Tom Petty is reportedly clinging to life in a southern California hospital after conflicting reports that he had died.

CBS News, citing Los Angeles Police Department, had reported on Monday that Petty, 66, had died.

The LAPD later said on Twitter it had "no information about the passing of singer Tom Petty. Initial information was inadvertently provided to some media sources."

Celebrity website TMZ.com, citing unidentified sources, reported later that Petty was not expected to live much longer but was "still clinging to life".

Actually, the "taking him off life support" bit was part of the mistaken earlier reports. TMZ now claims Mr. Petty is still on life support.

Damn it, this makes me incredibly sad. He was one of those artists who quietly did good work year after year -- sometimes very popular, sometimes not. But he was always there... until now.
