Tom Petty Suffers Heart Attack, on Life Support

Sad news. Remember Damn The Torpedoes coming out back when I was in high school. Don't think I have ever heard a bad Tom Petty song - a few that were overplayed, maybe, but not bad music.

And, IMO, American Girl is one of the most kick-ass pieces of rock music EVER:

Sadly, it's now official.

That comes from his daughter AND manager, so I accept that as final:

RIP, Tom.

I'll be listening to many of your works over the next few days.

Hypnotic Eye is a very fine album as a final record.

"My success is anybody's guess..."

Holy family resemblance!

Unfortunately, despite the premature announcement it didn't sound too hopeful.

No. I pretty much made up my mind that today would indeed be it the moment I read that the entire band went to visit him at the hospital. But, I wanted to wait until there was something official rather than contribute to what may have been another false report.

Seriously, what a journalistic mess that was today.

Sorry, Tom, but glad I'm not you at this point

Love ya!

Gutted to hear of this. He was on my bucket list of artists to see live. Just a great songwriter with such a listenable voice. And from everything I’ve seen and heard, a damn fine and decent human being too.

Who would've guessed this great musician would leave us so early. This news came out of the blue on an already rough day. I never got to see him live. RIP.

I am crushed.

:(

To me, Tom Petty was American Rock and Roll. As a kid I wore the grooves off Damn the Torpedoes. It was like discovering a hidden city.

Now it's one of my prized possessions:

Same here. He never did a dedicated tour of Australia either, so it was debatable as to whether we'd ever get him.

But i hear nothing but amazing things when it comes to a live Heartbreakers show.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were sublime live.

I don't know how of many of these are still floating around somewhere, but if you're interested, you should check out the Live Anthology:

5 discs of live stuff from all over. Lots of cool stickers, photo album, etc:

It's really incredible.

RIP Tom. Thanks for everything.

Good Lord...he toured with a fractured hip. *shudder* And that, along with all his other aliments...I can see why it would be fairly easy to take a few extra pills, under those circumstances.

Was he known to have panic disorder/anxiety and depression? I see citalopram and alprazolam on that list. The focus seems to be on the opioids, but you can die of alprazolam overdose when combined with other drugs.

Citalopram is an anti-depressant.

But yes the mix of opiates and benzodiazepines is a lethal combo that can lead to respiratory failure.

They are rarely prescribed together, and if they are they are very closely monitored.

A real shame.
