War for the Planet of the Apes pre-release thread

War for the Planet of Apes is the follow-up to Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and the third film in the rebooted Planet of the Apes series, which began with Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
The only returning cast member is Andy Serkis as Ceasar, he will be joined Steve Zahn as another ape, Woddy Harrleson as The Colonel, who I believe will the human villain. Gabriel Chavarria, and Amiah Miller will also be playing humans. It is being written by Matt Bomback, one of the three credited writers of Dawn, and Matt Reeves will be co-writing and directing.

Matt Reeves announced the start of filming with a tweeted picture of two actors in motion capture suits on a beach, one of them riding a horse.

I loved Rise and Dawn, and I can't wait to see where the series goes next. I am a little disappointed that none of Dawn's supporting cast members are coming back. There were several characters I wouldn't have minded seeing again, other than Ceasar.

So will a potential fourth film be called "Planet of the Apes" and follow the events of the missing ship?

But a whole new cast isn't always a bad thing, have to wait and see what they do.

They did a whole new cast between the first and second movies and it worked out incredibly well. This is one of the best rebooted series ever and I can't wait for War.

I'm hoping the whole new cast is so the scoop of the movie is more than San Fran, Caesar goes out and fights apically everywhere.

I like how they're keeping the story focused on the apes with this film series and switching out the entire human cast each time. Makes it more their (though mostly Caesar's) story. Which if you think about, is also more or less how the original movies did it.

Interesting to see them recreating that iconic shot that precedes the single most iconic shot in all of sci-fi cinema. I can't help but wonder if the whole point of setting it on the West Coast is precisely so they can't be tempted to revisit that. Seeing the ruin of the Golden Gate just doesn't have the same resonance.

My theory is the next movie will be a cross-country journey towards the east-coast. You get a sense towards the end of Dawn that they need to move out and find a new stomping ground in order to survive.

I don't think them changing casts is bad, I was just disappointed is all. I had the same reaction when the cast for Dawn was announced, but I ended up liking the new cast even better than Rise's. I know there's a pretty good chance the same thing could be true.

And now that I've said all of that, Judy Greer as Ceasar's wife Cornelia and Karin Kanoval as Maurice will both be returing. Hopefully Judy Greer will get more to do this time.

The original movies were much the same way, weren't they? The ape characters returned, but each film had different human leads. In those few cases where human characters did recur, they were never in lead roles more than once. Taylor was a lead in the first film and a supporting player in the second. Nova was a minor character in the first and a more prominent character in the second. Armando was a supporting character in the third and a central character in the fourth. Kolp was a henchvillain in the fourth and a somewhat more prominent villain in the fifth. And that's about it.

Does anybody have any idea what is going on with this movie? I haven't heard any news in ages, and it seems like the last big movie of the summer we haven't gotten a trailer for yet.

Oh, it's next year. I thought it was coming out this year. I was looking through Wikipedia and I saw the first release date this year, but didn't notice it was pushed back to next year.

In the lead up to the movie's presence at New York Comic Con, Fox has released their first description:
In War for the Planet of the Apes, the third chapter of the critically acclaimed blockbuster franchise, Caesar and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel. After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind. As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the Colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both their species and the future of the planet.
Sounds good to me. Has Woody Harrelson a villain role like this before? I don't think I've ever actually seen him in a totally serious role, even the more serious stuff he did, like The Hunger Games, still got a bit of comedy out of his characters.

Does Natural Born Killers count? I confess I've never seen it.

I meant the part of the title that gives away which species it is the planet of. ;)
I know ;) , but I think War will be what Battle might have been with a big budget. If you look back to Battle For The POTA (1973) the budget was small and it was apparent on screen in the final small, very small scale battle scene.
