War for the Planet of the Apes pre-release thread

I know, but I think War will be what Battle might have been with a big budget.

Actually that's pretty much what Dawn of the Planet of the Apes already was. It was a story about Caesar trying to make peace with the humans who survived after the apocalypse while his own human-hating lieutenant turned on him and tried to overthrow him, while at the same time a sympathetic human tried to dissuade an ape-hating human leader from going to war -- that's pretty much the same story as Battle for. So they wouldn't remake the same movie twice in a row.

True. I am sure War will have some impressive continuing conflict, thus the name. The battle depicted in Battle was so minor, both Dawn and War are more impressive with the budget they have depicting these conflicts. As a fan of the original POTA films, I always felt that Battle might have had another sequel film[instead of the CBS '74 tv series] as the new films are doing about further conflicts.

Well, I'm far more interested in what their technology can do in terms of creating believable, expressive ape characters who can work as emotional and dramatic leads. Battle scenes mostly kind of blur together for me; I'm not at all interested in depictions of violence, so such things only work for me if there's some demonstration of skill (e.g. martial arts combat, which is basically acrobatic dance so I can admire the physicality of it) or strategy (e.g. a story focusing more on the chess game between battle planners than on the action of combat itself). And long combat scenes tend to get in the way of the plot and drama and character development that I am interested in. Caesar's been a great character in the first two movies, and I hope the third one rides more on continuing that character exploration than on just action and battle sequences.

It might be nice to see the apes start to advance so that they speak more intelligible english and have technology closer to the original 1960s film. I don't see that happening within Caesar's own lifetime, though. He'd have to be a descendant.

Agree, the characters are primary. I just meant that in Battle the conflict was about three dozen on each side. ;) Unlike, in the other original POTA films which had many apes and humans used in '68, '70, '72. I am talking about the quantity of extras and actors.

i'm really looking forward to this. more so than even Guardians of the Galaxy 2. about future films, i wonder if they could keep Serkis on as a descendant of Caesar?

Oh yeah, there is no reason they couldn't keep Serkis on even if they do a time jump of hundreds or thousands of years. It would be a nice call back to Roddy McDowel's roles in the original series.

IGN has posted a fairly in depth interview with Reeves, Serkis and Clark about WftPotA.
Interesting bits:
The movie will take the Apes out of the woods and into the snow Sierra Mountains.
Cesar will end up in a darker place, and we will see him start to understand Koba's attitude a bit more.
Koba is dead after Dawn, but what happened with him will still have a bit impact on the movie.
Something happens that leads Cesar, Rocket, Maurice and co. to go after the Colonel to get revenge.

Looks great to me.
I'm wondering what's up with the human girl with the apes, because I get the feeling that she's somehow significant to the story.
I was really surprised when I that this was online. I had gotten Fandango's Movieclips Trailers YouTube channel to watch the Spider-Man trailer and managed to be on just 2 minutes after they posted this one.

Damn, you beat me to it!

I cannot wait! I love both Rise and Dawn (although the titles should be swapped) and this looks like another winner.

I agree the girl is probably very important. Perhaps a reminder to Caesar that there are some good humans.

Yay!

Didn't realize this was in development. I need to do a a Planet of the Apes marathon over Christmas, Burton-disaster included.

Good idea.

As far as Tim Burton's Planet Of The Apes(2001) film, I think that the final scene crashing in Washington D.C. should have been where the film began, not ended.

Love these movies. Hope the spaceship comes back by the end of this one.
Actually, I hope that doesn't happen. I prefer having a long period of time separating Caesar's uprising and the crash of the Icarus. I love the idea of the apes ruling Earth for many, many generations to the point that the idea of humans being intelligent and the dominant race is apocrypha.

Because I only love the original Planet of the Apes, I suddenly have this insane notion of having just the first Heston film existing alongside this series. I'll have to watch it again to see if there's anything mentioned in it that's contradictory to this series.

Now that would have been very interesting. Alas.
