I remember a lot of fan speculation about Reed when ENT was on the air. Archer was trying to talk to him about sport, and Reed seemed completely uninterested (forget what episode it was in. Season one, I think). Of course, people assumed he was gay because he didn't like sport!

 

Reed didn't need sport, he had the armory!

Of course, a guy who is not interested in watching a bunch of sweaty, scantily clad men running around must be gay....

 

Why does Star Trek need gay characters? Shows that try and represent every race/sexuality they can for no reason at all other than to appease those people tend to be rubbish.

This is becoming increasingly common in Britain where suddenly every crappy soap opera has an Indian family and a gay character. It's not that I have anything against those people, it's that those characters are blatantly inserted into the shows to be "politically correct" and so the shows are compatible with "multicultural Britain" (why does Britain need to be more multicultural when it already has plenty of culture to begin with?).

Anyway, Harry Kim was gay.

 

Why does Star Trek need straight characters?

Maybe they shouldn't try to appease those people, but everyone who thinks that TV shows should have...you know, a certain degree of realism? Like, you know, not deliberately ignoring a rather big portion of human population and pretending that they don't exist? We're not talking about a group like, say, intersex (hermaphrodite) people, who are very rare, 1 in thousands. Yet, oddly enough, Star Trek has had (alien) intersex characters, but no gay or bisexual characters, human or alien... except in the "evil" Mirror Universe. It has also had polygamous characters - and I really don't believe that polygamists make up a bigger percentage of the human population today than LBGT people do.

So... it seems like Trek has had a problem with the idea of portraying gay and bisexual people, or even acknowledging their existence, dontcha think?

Is there any good reason why a gay or Indian character can't be as well written and compelling as a straight white character? If there is, please enlighten me.

If the writers of those shows have problems with writing those characters more than they have with writing straight white people.. um, I'd say it's those writers who have a problem, and those shows should think of hiring some new ones.

 

It does seem to be a challenge for some shows to show gays just as 'normal' people. Usually, as you say, the writing is just awful and does the exact opposite. I actually like FLASHFOWARD's recent use of gay characters. They dialog between the two women didn't seem unreal at all..made them seem like real, three dimensional characters...
