Youth & Vitality

I'm a mere 37. I get more little niggles than I used to, like Tennis elbow, that sort of thing, but generally I feel fitter than I have at any point in my life beforehand.

That's probably because I am fitter though, I used to do no exercise, drink a lot, smoke a lot and take a lot of drugs. Now I exercise every day, drink a bit, don't smoke and hardly take any drugs at all, hardly.

The people who live to be a hundred, or more, always turn out to have been "regular" people, it's just arbitrary. It's genetic.

No, that's not true. You can fight your genes. Excercise and healthy eating do affect how long you live *and* your quality of life (perhaps even more important).

I'm in my 40s and feeling great!

I couldn't help but notice that you said "hardly" twice. Who are you trying to convince here?

What say you? Is it possible to still feel healthy and youthful as you reach your 40s, 50s and beyond?

The easiest way for people to do that is to take care of themselves in their 10s, 20s and 30s. The state of health for many young people nowadays is appalling. When the subject comes up with young people, I tell them its one thing to be fat or not in good shape while you're young but it truly sucks when you're older.

Some wise guys reply to that by telling me to look at myself, and I say it took me 54 years to get to look like this and you did it in 20. It comes down to keeping up with your health so you don't get to the point where its extremely difficult to get out of the hole you put yourself in.

I turn 36 in a couple of months (I was 25 when I joined this BBS, WOW!) and the biggest change I've made over the last few years is the transition from a night owl to a morning person. I used to be very much into the night life, but now I'm all about getting to bed by 9:30 and getting a full, refreshing 7-8 hours of sleep.

Nothing (since I quit smoking) has made as big a difference on how I feel everyday. I get annoyed sometimes when people tell me "you can get by on 4/5/6 hours"... yeah, I can get buy, but I don't want to feel all day like I'm getting by. I like to feel like a big bowl of wonderful!

In terms of fitness, I suppose anyone can be physically fit at any age if they really work at it. I've never really reached an optimum level of physical fitness, and I probably never will. I'm either overweight or just plain average at one point or another.

I realize having a mesomorphic type of body can be equated with youthfulness, but I guess my original question had to do with feeling young and vibrant - mentally and physically. I still would like to be able to enjoy life regardless of my age or level of fitness.

I keep getting older and older but I feel exactly the same as when I was 20. Except I'm fitter. My mind seems to be, if anything, more immature. Vibrant? YES I feel vibrant as my natural state, I'm an idealist and optimistic to a fault, sometimes a stupid fault

When my life has been really shitty and I lose the optimism I am.. appalled. And a little freaked out at all the gritty greyness of reality.

I do find my peers agewise are pissing me off more and more as they all turn into calcified luddites and stop trying new stuff, listening to new stuff.. or changing their views about anything. They probably see me though and think "she never grows up".

Ha, nobody, i'm quite comfortable with my recreational activities. That was an obscure Aliens reference, implying that while my statement generally holds true it is not a hard and fast rule :p

This is how I feel, too. I wake up every morning thinking I'm 25. At some point during the day I am reminded that I am not -- usually when one of my teenage children wanders into the vicinity.
