"Your Highness" red band trailer (Natalie Portman, Zooey Deschanel)

Re: "Your Highness" red band trailer (Natalie Portman, Zooey Deschanel

Except of course, that it is nowhere near the same thing. First of, making dinner isn't beating someone up. Second, she didn't beat him up to show she's able to defend herself, she beat him up because she felt like it.

I just wanted to say that I agree with your sentiments, 3D Master.
And according to a few reviews that I've read about this film, there is a scene in which a minotaur chases a man around with a huge erection, and then rapes him on camera. Here's a video (NSFW) of them talking about the penis and creating it. http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/3b134a8415/danny-mcbride-david-gordon-green-talk-monster-balls

Now, maybe I'm not "of the times" or something, but how is this remotely funny?

And why does it seem like every time a penis is shown on camera--in a movie other than a porn--that it's either mutilated or made into a joke? The penises are also never normal-sized or small; they're always big or humongous.

Another thing that's strange is you never see many vaginas on the big screen, do you? At least, I can't think of any recent mainstream films that have shown vaginas, let alone vaginas getting mutilated (not that I want to see one get mutilated). The last film I saw with a penis in it was Piranha 3D (where in the end you see a floating severed penis be eaten by a piranha, and then be spat up at the camera).

My question is, how can anyone watch this stuff and not think it's anti-masculinity or misandrist?

That's my two cents.

Re: "Your Highness" red band trailer (Natalie Portman, Zooey Deschanel

The buzz around this movie isn't so good right now. Pretty low rating on Rotten Tomatoes and it has been given the stamp of approval by infamous critic Armond "I hate what the majority likes and love what the majority hates" White.

The funniest thing about his review is that he calls this flick easily the best movie David Gordon Green has made since his 2000 debut, which was, by all accounts, a serious, thoughtful, mature, deeply sad and moving indie drama. Comments like that are so obviously flame bait.

Well, that's a kiss of death right there.

Wow, I hadn't heard anything about this minotaur stuff, that definitely kills any interest I had in this movie. I can deal with that in a serious drama where it is portrayed as the horrible thing that it is, but I can't handle jokes about it. The one and only time I was actually was offended by Family Guy was the episode where the bull raped Peter and then kept harassing him.
As for vagina's in movies, there was Babel a fews back.

EDIT: Ok, just watched the video, and I stopped at the bit about getting the kid stoned. I guess I just don't have the right sense of humor for that kind of stuff. It's weird, I watch things like Archer, Family Guy, and South Park, and it doesn't bother me, but that stuff in the video did.

Indeed, that video didn't exactly fill me with a lot of... well humor or anything. It was lame and, well, almost disgusting.

Nice try, 3D Master.

Re: "Your Highness" red band trailer (Natalie Portman, Zooey Deschanel

Wow, the Rotten Tomatoes rating is damn low. If it were in the 50s or even high 40s, I'd probably see it, since it's supposed to just be a stupid movie anyway, but that just suggests it'll be a stupid movie with nothing worth laughing at and that's not worth it.

Re: "Your Highness" red band trailer (Natalie Portman, Zooey Deschanel

I said to a coworker this morning that bad reviews on Your Highness are beside the point. The film is going to garner only bad reviews, because the critical community is wholly unprepared for a $140 million medieval stoner comedy; Your Highness falls completely outside their experience.

Your Highness could well be an objectively bad film, but I suspect it has no ambitions beyond being exactly what it is.

Indeed... Practically 50% of Sci-Fi / Fantasy monsters have vagina-ish elements. Another example:

Re: "Your Highness" red band trailer (Natalie Portman, Zooey Deschanel

of course the movie is going to get bad reviews, its a stoner film. you think Ebert is going to 'get' the movie?

Oh come on, he's not THAT closed-minded and fussy. Give him more credit. He has appreciated plenty of movies that are full of profanity and/or about stoners.

For example, he wrote quite positively about "Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle" (which I saw for the first time recently and was pleasantly surprised by, aside from one part that was too stupid for me). He really wanted to like "Your Highness" given the talent involved (he's a big fan of the director), but apparently it's absolute garbage.

Re: "Your Highness" red band trailer (Natalie Portman, Zooey Deschanel

Interesting all this talk about Roger Ebert's review and no one took a look at it? Anyways here's a taste (rest at the link, obviously):

"Your Highness" is a juvenile excrescence that feels like the work of 11-year-old boys in love with dungeons, dragons, warrior women, pot, boobs and four-letter words. One of the heroes even wears the penis of a minotaur on a string around his neck. I hate it when that happens.

Edit: Oops, sorry Too Much Fun, didn't see that you referenced his review in your post.

Re: "Your Highness" red band trailer (Natalie Portman, Zooey Deschanel

eh, i still refuse to get movie advice from the man who wrote 'Beyond the Valley of the Dolls'.

Considering that's what the trailers have advertised, and what the target audience is expecting, I see nothing at all critical about it.

First it's because he "doesn't get it" which is patently untrue, now it's because he wrote Beyond the Valley of the Dolls... like over 40 years ago.

Why don't you just say you don't like Ebert or his reviews, why trump up other excuses?

Re: "Your Highness" red band trailer (Natalie Portman, Zooey Deschanel

This movie looks terrible, just plain terrible and the BtS link above doesn't sell me on anything at all. I've no problems with "stoner comedies" which can be fun but it looks like this movie is just going to an exercise in the lowest of possible stoner/penis jokes it's going to be Year One all over again.

Re: "Your Highness" red band trailer (Natalie Portman, Zooey Deschanel

^I'm with you there. I love the Harold & Kumar movies, and before the yesterday I thought this could actually be pretty funny. I really liked Pineapple Express, and I like James Franco, Natalie Portman, and Zooey Deschanel, but after yesteday there is no way I'm seeing this.
