Your agonizer, please

In a discussion here: https://www.trekbbs.com/threads/star-trek-novels-and-canon.60590/page-10#post-15084840, I suggested the MU eye issues might be a side effect of continuous agonizer use, both on the part of those being agonized and those operating the agonizer. Those who frequently doled out punishment or frequently were punished would both develop this issue.

I just had another thought: the reason "your agonizer" is demanded is because each one is tuned to the individual, to inflict particular pain based on individual tolerance levels and species susceptibility, just as the agony booth does for the latter. If you shoot Bob with Ralph's agonizer, it may not hurt as much because Bob has a higher pain tolerance than Ralph.

Imagine if you had a generic "Agonizer" Flash Light.

Where everything that got caught in the cone of light gets Agonized.

Georgiou refers to it as the "singular biological difference between our two races".

If it were caused by agonizers, then wouldn't the situation have to be:

A. That agonizers have been used on so many Terrans so many times, and for so long that the species has actually been altered biologically across the board.
B. That not a single other side effect of agonizers had lead to a biological change.

Generally speaking, I don't see the idea as one with merit. I just don't see agonizers being that widespread and used to that extent.

You can torture an individual for decades until their body is unrecognizable, but to do it on a scale and for such a long time that you affect the entire human race? I can't fathom it.

I prefer to think that it's a rare birth defect that Lorca and Georgiou happen to share (or maybe caused by an event they were both present for), and that Georgiou is just a gigantic liar. :)

It used to be the practice to send a child to fetch the instrument to be used to administer corporal punishment. The fearful anticipation caused by this being considered part of the punishment.

I simply assumed this was why people carried "personal" agonisers. Firstly, to keep the consequences of any misaction on their part to the front of their mind and secondly, to add a degree of anticipation to the punishment.

That's an interesting angle...I wonder if they sometimes made the guilty officer punish an innocent (of that infraction, anyway) crew member, if they knew the guilty one cared for the innocent one.
