This is, of course, the line shouted by someone within the Federation Council chambers at the outset of Star Trek IV, as the Klingon ambassador declares that "there shall be no peace as long as Kirk lives." Does anyone know the story behind it's inclusion in the film, as it seems a somewhat stronger obscenity than any other I can remember being used in Star Trek, excluding various Klingon and Romulan curses that were never translated.

Star Trek IV has more profanity than any other film, partly because of the crew's journey into the "primitive and paranoid culture" of 1986, as evidenced by phrases such as "double-dumbass on you." The shouting in the council chamber isn't included in the script, however. The script reads only that the Klingon ambassador left the room "with a flourish." The line itself is spoken off-screen, but it's not referenced in the script itself.

Was the line ad-libbed by an extra? Was it missed during the final editing of the film? Did the producers decide to leave it in after deciding that they liked its inclusion, given the tense relationship between the Federation and the Klingon Empire at that time.

I always wondered what had been shouted across the chambers... now I almost wish I'd never found out! Lol

I used the CC to feature on the DVD to figure out that line out years ago, it really is kind of random. Funny, but i thought the name of this thread was just a shout out to certain posters here who think they know everything about Trek, and often come across as described ;)

This is actually a case of diplomatic training. Klingon ambassadors respond more favorably to insults than politeness. ;)

It's funny. From the original theatrical viewing (when I was 13 years old) until just a few years ago, I had no idea what that line actually said. I'm sure a lot of other moviegoers in 1986 didn't get it either, due to the muffled way it was delivered.

Of course, now that I know what the line says, I also have to scratch my head and ask, just what was the purpose of it? I mean, it's not like the Klingon Ambassador, his staff, or anyone else in the council chamber even responded to it when it was yelled out. It's not like we even saw who yelled it.

Well at least the Klingon Ambassador was made to eat his words a few years later.

"There can be no peace as long as Kirk lives""

I had never noticed this before ... you learn something new every day!
Wow, in all my countless viewings of this movie, I too have never consciously registered that line. Yet, I've just replayed the scene in question and it's high and clear in the sound mix - quite easily discernible. Weird!
