changes day to day, but ten films I like off the top of my head

Yeah, same here. At the moment, 16 fave films (in no particular order) include:

The Big Sleep (1946)
Spirited Away
The Seven Samurai
Les Miserables (1935)
Shrek
Apollo 13
The Silence of the Lambs
Psycho
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
Ben Hur
12 Angry Men (1957)
Amelie
Yellowbeard
Monsters Inc
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
King Kong (1933)

Part of the problem with people's attitudes toward The Heretic is that they're judging it by the standards of the original 1973 William Friedkin/William Peter Blatty film.
Actually. I saw The Heretic before I saw the first one and still disliked it. It took me a long time to watch the first movie because I was expecting that I wouldn't like it.

My list (ever changing and in no particular order)

  • The Manchurian Candidate (original)
  • Night of the Hunter
  • Forbidden Planet
  • The Thing (John Carpenter version)
  • Soylent Green
  • The Omega Man
  • Lethal Weapon
  • L.A.Confidential
  • Saving Silverman
  • Silent Running
  • Tequila Sunrise
  • Alien
  • Tombstone
  • Unforgiven
  • Ravenous

I do wonder what anyone likes about the first Exorcist movie. To me, it's a pretty boring, tedious film, with a rather good soundtrack.

I've only seen The Exorcist once. I found it to be plodding and, worse, not scary! The French Connection is the far superior Friedken film, though I haven't seen Cruising.
