Wynonna Earp: Season Three

Just for the sake of clarity, this is an issue with IDW Productions being able to provide its portion of the show's financing and production, and does not fall on SyFy's shoulders, which means that the fans' efforts to "save" the show mean even less than usual unless they're somehow able to 'crowdfund' the money that IDWP needs to help SyFy pay for the show.

SyFy, for their part, still remains committed to the series and would not be at fault in this particular instance were it to ultimately go under.

Do we remain hopeful that something will be done to preserve the life of the series in some form? With our work within the save-our-show field, which we like to think we’ve been active in for a good seven or eight years, everything we’re seeing is positive. Yet, hope makes no guarantee. All parties involved would like to see the same Wynonna Earp you know and love back on the air; the quest becomes now taking that ambition and turning it into action

Less than a week after the Season 3 premiere aired last year, while hosting a panel at SDCC, Syfy announced that it had ordered a fourth. But now, that has been delayed due to financial problems with IDW Entertainment. (The series is based on an IDW comic book.) At this time, no further details were given.

IDW pays the full production cost of ‘Wynonna Earp’ and retains ownership of the series, which is licensed by Syfy. Because Syfy ordered the fourth season, IDW is contractually obligated to deliver it. So hopefully that means that production can begin soon, once whatever these financial woes are can be resolved.

Syfy issued this simple statement:

“Syfy ordered season four of Wynonna Earp from IDW and is completely committed to the series. This has not changed.”

For its part, IDW delivered this statement:

“IDW is committed to continuing to tell the Wynonna Earp story. Much like the fans, we are passionate about not only the series, but the comics, the characters and the overall message that the Wynonna Earp franchise carries. We are in the process of working out the details for how the Wynonna story will continue and will share new details very soon.”

What can fans do to help?
Though obviously there isn’t a lot fans can do financially (unless you happen to be independently wealthy and want to give all of that money to IDW — in which case, feel free), social media is kicking into high gear. The hashtag #FightforWynonna has started to gain some serious traction, with fans tweeting out their support.

Even the cast is in on it: In addition to Andras, Melanie Scrofano (who plays Wynonna), Kat Barrell (Nicole Haught), Tim Rozon (Doc Holliday), Dominique Provost-Chalkley (Waverly Earp), and Varun Saranga (Jeremy Chetri) all tweeted out their own supportive messages to the fandom, showing their love for the series and willingness to fight for it.

I had no idea IDW was in such dire financial straits or that it would affect Wynonna Earp. Hopefully they can get it worked out and back into production soon.

As far as I know, it's only the television arm of the company - IDW Productions - that is in financial distress, which is why production of Wynonna Earp has been impacted.

I did see they are also trying to launch another three series for television. That can't be a good idea if they are struggling with just the one.

I was just adding Sense8 and Timeless to my OCD list, and it got me thinking. If IDW's TV wing is in such dire straits financially why not just work with Syfy to make a wrap-up TV movie instead of a much more expensive additional season? It's not ideal, but it's far better than the alternative. Besides, all the cool cancelled genre shows that weren't snatched up by Amazon are doing it.

The future doesn't sound good in this story.

This one, however, is more hopeful.

Its sounds so funny when you hear someone's real accent for the first time. (Yes, I mean you, Dominique Provost-Chalkley, aka Waverly Earp).

Now, I just need to rewatch Season 3 all the way through. I ended up losing track part way through the season, and by the time I remembered it and tried to get back it, the first few episodes I missed had been pulled. That happens to me a lot.
