Wrath of Khan Magazine article from 1982

You have to make arrangements to see it I don't believe you can just walk in. I have two nephews that live in San Diego who arranged it for me when I came out there to visit many years ago. So I can tell you very little about how to set it up.
As for the content it virtually has everything that you would read in the script up until the point where Spock leaves the bridge to go repair the engine -- that's where the work print ends. If you were to find a copy of the script online which you can at many places and read the script scene by scene anything that you don't recognize as being in the director's cut version was pretty much in the work print version. So that include among other things the mention of saavik being Romulan the original version of the Kirk vs David fight extended dialogue by Khan when they capture Chekov, a scene where Tyrell calls the Reliant and tells them that they have guests to beam up, Chekov & Terrell seeing the baby at the window and finding the baby inside the Cargo Carrier, McCoy and David arguing after Terrell and Jedda are killed, Etc. There are only two small bits of dialogue that are in the script that are not in the work print.
As for the recordings I lost my audio recording of the entire work print and only have the deleted scenes saved. Someone once posted the audio with Kirk mentioning Sulu's promotion to Captain on another thread over the existing footage footage.

The notable scenes that I saw on the work print were......
An even longer version of the Saavik is Romulan scene. the short version can be viewed online.
Kirk actually trying on the half glasses in his apartment and looking at the label on the bottle.
An Alternate Chekhov log entry where he refers to himself as a duty officer instead of first officer and with slightly different dialogue.
David complaining to his mother about the military mentality of Starfleet.
Chekov and Terrell seeing the baby at the porthole.
Chekov and Terrell finding the baby inside.
Khan mentioning Marla McGiver's by name in a long tirade.
Mind-controlled Tyrrell calling the Reliant for beam-up of guests.
The famous Sulu being mentioned as Captain of Excelsior scene.
A bit more dialogue by Spock talkin about the ethics of the Genesis device and Kirk mentioning that Chekhov is on Reliant when saavik notifies them that Reliant is nearby.
When they find Terrell McCoy recognizes him as being an old shipmate.
Original version of Kirk fighting David where David gets the upper hand and Carol has to diffuse the situation by blurting out that they are father and son.
McCoy and David arguing about the deaths of their friends.
Extended dialogue by Carol when she and Kirk are alone in the tunnel.
Saavik and David flirting in the Eden cave and McCoy actually saying that it's like the Garden of Eden.

The only bits of any note that are in the script that are not in the work print are a speech by Khan when he's first aboard the Reliant where talks about the events of space seed and 2 scenes in sickbay just before the Second Battle, one where McCoy is working on Chekov and the second after a near hit by a photon torpedo where Chekhov wakes up from surgery and David sneaks out of sickbay. Although those things were shot and stills of them exist.
There were of course a lot of other single lines of dialogue that were cut here and there.

wow, that sounds pretty awesome. I've read a couple of Wrath scripts online before and have noticed slight variations between versions so I wasn't sure which one was the filmed version. I do have a question for you, in the theatrical cut Terrell is leaning over the eel pit (i think) when Checkov says "we need to go". Terrell replies "but what about the tricorder?" In the Wrath scripts i've read he always says "but what about the child?" or something to that effect. I'm curious now, in the version you saw is it the same shot with the tricorder line being dubbed over? I've tried to watch muted to see if he's mouthing child but i'm no lip reader so I can't really tell. With the sound on it looks a little wonky like it might be dubbed over but then again it might be my imagination.

The mag is great, lots of rare pics and one i've never seen before (Terrell in space suit on ground). It's always a rush when you come across a new tidbit of Trek history! It's like when I first saw pictures of the memory wall sequence or test shots of Xon and Illia for Phase 2. I'll have to go to ebay and see if I can find a copy for sale.

The scene is so skilfully edited that you think he's still in the first room with the bunks but actually it's been edited and they're actually in a second room the one with the child and the one with the books that Chekov sees on the wall.
The shot has been zoomed and cropped so that the child is cut out of the picture in the finished version if you look closely at it you can see that they're no longer in the first room and that the actual eel tank is in the background when Terrell is kneeling down the second time

oh wow! I did not notice the tank in the background! I need to go back and rewatch now! I've studied that botany bay sequence so many times to try and figure out where the cuts were that I can't believe I missed the tank in the background! Question, is the line about Khan eating his own entrails like Prometheus in the work print? One script I've read had that line the other didn't.

No, that line was not in the work print. I'm sure it was filmed but it was probably an early cut because the studio probably figured "how many people will know who Prometheus is - they will just be confused!" LOL.
I used to own a hard copy script that I bought by mail back in 1990 but for years I've been just looking at the script online so I am curious where you are seeing two versions of the Wrath of Khan script! I've never seen anywhere online two versions of the script -- just the one version that matches my old physical copy.
I really wish they would have left all the Khan stuff in that first scene. The Prometheus line and his angry tirade about Marla McGiver's being dead. But that first Khan scene runs pretty long. Another interesting fact is that Star Trek II has the longest amount of time with no appearance by Kirk in any Star Trek movie. From his scene with McCoy at his apartment to his appearance in the shuttlepod on the way to the Enterprise is probably in the 15 to 17 minute range. There is no stretch of any Star Trek movie anywhere near that length without Kirk. That may be why they cut out so much material during that stretch. What was 15 to 17 minutes without the hero of the story being seen would have been nearly 20 minutes with all the deleted stuff left in.

It is not the shooting script at all it is a transcript of the movie. It is simply the script edited to match the movie and therefore has removed all the lines that the shooting script would have. They used to sell those with a red cover and I flipped through it and I was appalled to find that somebody would buy what they thought was a script and it was nothing but the actual movie transcribed into script form without any of the missing parts. Who the heck would want to buy a script that exactly matched the movie and didn't give you any insight to what was added in or taken out? I still see those online occasionally even on Amazon

You don't happen to remember what collection it's included with, do you? I seem to remember the last time I tried to checked, I could never find it.

The special collections department doesn't have this. You'll want to look this up using the UCLA Film and Television Archive online catalog, and make an appointment to see it through them.

I don't think you have to be a student to see it, but it's been ages, and I was a student when I last saw it. You can view it at a computer, but they also have larger rooms you can reserve if you don't want to watch with headphones on.

Well the phony transcript is in script form -- it doesn't appear at first glace as a transcript it's masquerading as a proper script but I'm glad you clarified that you saw two different scripts that both had deleted scenes that were not identical because as I said I've only ever seen one. Love to read the other one and check out the differences if it can be located somewhere online.
But a lot of the scenes that were deleted when you see them on the work print the lines are not read by the actors exactly as they were written in the script. For example in the Sulu promotion scene McCoy has a line of dialogue in the work print where he says, "oh congratulations Commander."
That line is not in the script at all but must have been improvised on the set that day.
But as I said the Sulu promotion scene is one deleted bit that exists on this forum and somebody has gone to the trouble of adding the deleted Dialogue on top of the existing footage I wish I knew which thread that was in or even how to search for such a thing. Because then you would see the difference between the two scripts that you've looked at and then how it actually was filmed back in the day.

Finally got a chance to rewatch this scene and wow, talk about mind blown. This is one of my most rewatched movies of all time and I never realized there were two rooms in this scene. My brain always told me that was the eels he was leaning over when Chekov tells him to go so obviously they were still in the same room. But there is clearly a doorway to a room right behind them, you see the eel tank as Checkov walks to the books, they even walk through the damn doorway as they’re leaving into the first room and my brain didn’t acknowledge any of this! You’re right about that being skillful editing! Now that I see it I can’t unsee it and don’t know how I never saw it! I’ve been seeing five lights for the past 30 years and now I see four! Lol.
