Worst Director EVER! (Nominations)

It's tough for me to say because I don't really watch enough bad films, but I'll go with the obvious Michael Bay choice simply because of all the uninspiring copycats his already mediocre style started.

You can't call anyone worst director ever for a couple turds. Have you seen Scorcese's recent work? Lynch screwed up Dune and he has a couple really inaccessible conceptual films. I can't stand Lost Highway. But he also did Blue Velvet, Eraserhead, Mulholland Drive and Twin Peaks.

Scorsese's recent work contains The Departed and The Wolf of Wall Street so I think he's safe.

I adore Lynch (obviously). Dune is not great and Wild at Heart is all over the place, and Inland Empire is a mess, but even these three films have moments of brilliance. However, when he's on, he's fucking on. Lost Highway, Fire Walk With Me, and, the best film of all time in my view, Mulholland Drive.

I would think if you're nominating someone as worst director ever, then at the very least, one of the criteria should be that they never made a good movie, because as long as there's some of those out there, then people who've made good stuff AND some crappers can't be the worst

When I see names like Ridley Scott or Steven Spielberg, I'm wondering how anyone could think they are the worst ever? They're actually some of the best ever, and just happen to wreck now & then. They ALL do that

I mean... David Lynch? Good god. The Straight Story brought me to tears. I've got the poster on my hobby room wall. It's a bloody masterpiece unlike anything I'd have ever thought him capable of, or even interested in making

Hey... I mostly can't stand Brian DePalma's movies. Some of them are just plain unwatchable. I'm not even super fond of Scarface, & I even walked out of Raising Cain, but I'd never consider him the worst ever. He made The Untouchables for god sake.

Alan Smithee, famed director of bad motion pictures, documentaries, short subjects, music videos, and television programs, including an episode of Kate Mulgrew's Mrs. Columbo.

Came to say this. :)

Also, Simon West for Tomb Raider. Made a hash of a cool concept. Surprised no one mentioned it.

Joel Schumacher.

Batman Returns and Batman and Robin.

Tim Burton did Batman Returns.
Do you mean Batman Forever?
Or are you nominating Tim Burton...

Zach Synder. That's my nomination. While he is very good with visuals, he lacks any sense of character.

This thread seems to have rapidly devolved into "directors I think are overrated" and/or "directors who are overly commercial."

M. Night Shyamalan, a one-trick pony who gets worse with each successive movie...

Whisper whisper whisper whisper TWIST whisper, end movie

Because horses for courses, to each their own, and there are spo many bad directors out there. :)

Besides, Brett Ratner worse than Uwe Boll? Tough call.

Even X-men: the Last Stand can be forgiven when you consider that the real problem with that movie was-reportedly- studio interference.

James Nguyen, Birdemic.

Tommy Wiseau, The Room.

Harold Warren, Manos: The Hands of Fate.

Seriously, watching enough MST3K and Rifftrax can really shift your perspective on "worst director."

Ed Wood is a love child between Hitchcock and Spielberg compared to those men above.

@Locutus

When people create 'Worst' topics on message boards they really mean 'Famous thing that I am most annoyed is famous'. I'd just like to see acknowledged that this is what the thread is really about. No need to be rude.

My nomination for 'Famous director I am most annoyed is famous' is Jason Friedberg/Aaron Seltzer. The team responsible for most of the '_____ Movie' parodies.

I was just having fun. ;) I actually like a few Michael Bay movies even the worst Transformers Revenge Of The Fallen!

I actually really like Armageddon, and know quite a few folks who love Bad Boys and Pearl Harbor. It seems like his best work came out of working for the great Jerry Bruckheimer. When he went out on his own, his quality seemed to suffer.

Still, to be fair to him, I can't help but recall Quentin Tarantino's theory of That One Film. As he described to Charlie Rose, a major reason once-great directors seem to "lose it" later in their careers tends to involve one film, which they pour their heart and soul into...only to have it bomb either critically or commercially--but either way, it REALLY fails to live up to their dreams for the project.

For Bay...I really think that's what happened with Pearl Harbor. He tried to make a "great", epic film...and it didn't work. And so he began to stop caring.

I am actually surprised no one mentioned M. Night Shyamalan, he has been off his game for a while. :p

Mm-hmm. General consensus seems to be: he hasn't made a good film since Signs (though there HAVE, to be fair, been defenders of The Village and The Happening).

And even with Signs...okay. Water? Really?

Hey--remember that Newsweek cover that has him with the caption "THE NEXT SPIELBERG"? Yeah....

Still, the fact that his next film has Bruce Willis (who starred in his two best films) would SEEM to indicate he's promising us that he's learned his lesson, but...I'm not gonna get my hopes up.

(For the record, I would go with the theory that That One Film for him was The Village.)

Whoever invented Dogma-95.

Lars Von Trier, to name one.

I thought Melancholia was tough to watch but visually impressive. I've only seen part one of Nymphomaniac but the genius there is pretty self-evident.

What Dogme 95 films have you seen to make you dislike it so much?

For me, the first and only film of Von Trier's that I've seen is Dancer In The Dark.

While it's an aesthetically beautiful film, and well-crafted, I really felt the woman was an idiot for defending the memory of the guy that screwed her over...when telling all would've probably gotten her off.

Oh, and the fact that the film seems to drip with hatred for movie musicals doesn't help, any.

Still, I'd like to see the Europa flicks. I'm always up for a good Film Noir.

@ Rush Limborg

Armageddon I give a pass to, Loved Bad Boys. Pear Harbor fell apart like a decent EP of a bad TV season. Pain & Gain gets props but Transformers 1, 3 & 4...Ugh. + The Island. Bah!

Europa/Zentropa was great, and shows that Von Trier can make a good film if he wants to.

Shyamalan can write, but he should let someone else direct.

M. Night Shyamalan should direct a superhero movie, like darker DC or Marvel.

ETA: Darker: Mystery/Supernatural.
