Captain
Captain
I watched this ep the other day and noticed something in the scene in the transporter room between Kirk and Spock. After Spock sent the Scalosians back down to the planet they exchanged a look between them. I just wondered if it just meant "okay Spock I know you must have a way to restore us to the way we were before, despite what Deela said. That there was no going back."
I just thought how many other times did they say things with a look rather than words. How long had they known each other before they knew what the other is thinking.

I always wondered if they knew each other before Kirk became Captain of the Enterprise or they got to know each other once Pike was gone.

If WNMHGB is any indication, meaning it is part of the chain of events that lead to the series, then no, they didn't know one another before Kirk became Captain of the Enterprise. But they quickly became friends, getting to know each other over games of chess. Add to that Spock being understanding of Kirk's needs after Mitchell's death, and that friendship is not only inevitable, but bound to be long-standing.

Every indication of that coming afterward is evidence of how deep their friendship becomes, from Kirk standing by Spock during "The Menagerie" while knowing he's playing with the possibility of facing the death penalty, to potentially giving up his career to save Spock's soul, to calling him his brother, to depending on Spock to get him and McCoy off of Rura Penthe and believing he can do it easily. That level of trust must be earned, and Spock did so very early on.

Based on the Menagerie, I'd say they first met when Kirk took command, since that was the only time Kirk met Pike and Spock had served with PIke for over a decade. Though It's possible Kirk and Spock crossed before that. But I don't recall an episode mentioning it.

WNMHGB established that Spock and Gary served together for years. So Kirk and Spock might have known each other for years as well. Given the banter they share, they seem comfortable around each other ( and Gary) like old friends. . Maybe Gary was their "Third Musketeer" before McCoy came along.

I never unerstood the assumption or interpretation that Spock and Mitchell served together or known each other for years. I always took it that Dehner was referring to Kirk and Mitchell.

Spock and Mitchell seem as if they're not long acquaintances, but have served together awhile. I think anyone thinking that bases it just on the fact that Mitchell's been there awhile. And we assume Spock has been, maybe wrongly.

Dehner;
I know those from your planet aren't suppose to have feelings like we do, Mister Spock, but to talk that way about a man you've worked next to for years is worse than ...

Exactly. Dehner is talking about Spock and Mitchell serving together. So it's not an assumption and she's speaking directly to Spock.

This would imply that Mitchell was already aboard when Kirk took command. Therefore Mitchell served with Pike.
Or Kirk has been in command of the Enterprise for several years at the time of WNMHGB, with Mitchell and Spock by his side.

Not if what one goes by what we learn later in "The Menagerie."
I guess that depends on when WNMHGB takes place. The Menagerie's "flashback" takes place 13 years before the episode. In it Spock states he served with Pike for 11 years. So I assume he's been under Kirk's command for two years. If WNMHGB takes place towards the end of those two years, but prior to season one it works. (in the broad sense)

Maybe Gary Mitchell signed up with Pike for his last few years in command? Not sure if anyone has written a novel with the two of them in it together?
