Will Sam Beckett Return Home? NBC Orders Quantum Leap Reboot Pilot

Just got the box set by Mill Creek.
Isn't there an episode where Sam leaps into the guy that writes the song Peggy Sue only he's singing Piggy Sue to a pig?
How the Tess Was Won

Throughout the episode there is a young boy in glasses who works for the Veterinarian Sam leaped into. Sam has no idea what the kid’s name and tries to awkwardly hide it. Right before he Leaps the kid starts signing Piggy Sue to one of the pigs and Sam and Al finally realize who he is. Sam Says “Buddy, How about Peggy Sue?”

It’s funny because he is a minor character in the episode. Sam and Al think the whole episode his goal is getting the Tomboy daughter of the owner of the Ranch to fall in love with the guy Sam leaped into. Which does not work and they are completely lost what they are supposed to do until that very end.

Not surprising it was picked up. I am happy. I am hoping the series films in Los Angeles not Vancouver like the Pilot was. Which producer Deborah Pratt said was the plan. Not just because it would probably make a guest appearance by Scott Bakula easier. But anyone else who worked on the original who lives in the United States. In front and behind the camera. The original costume designer said online he was going to inquire about working on the Pilot when he first learned of it. But when he found out it was filming in Canada told fans that was not possible.

I'm thinking of opening a thread on my rewatch.... It's the 2nd time I started this series because for whatever reason I never finished it the last time and that was several years ago. I just lost interest after season 2. I am going to give it a proper go this time. The episode where Sam finds his lost love Donna was a really good one too and that one kind of got to me, got dust in my eye. Ooh and they were at the Watergate hotel how's that for coincidence?

I've had a few episodes of the original show on in the backgrond now that Syfy is showing it, and I really hope the new one continues to have the main character leaping into people from other races and sexes. It always seemed to me that a big part of the show was putting Sam into situations that were totally different from his, and I'd hate to see the new show lose by only putting the new leaper into people just like him.
I know you have to do that kind of thing to carefully so you don't offend anyone, but the original series very much proved it could be done well.

He leaps into a farm vet and Buddy Holly works for him.

Oops Jinx. Got beat to it.

But that moment fell under the "Kiss for history" in the show's writer's guide. Where Sam could kiss history but not participate in it. Of course, in the final season they broke that rule big time... several times.

That they did, and multiple leaps into the same person in season 4 and 5

I just hope we get a more satisfactory end to Sam's story by the time this show ends, even if Sam himself doesn't appear.

I think that in this single still we see more people working in the project that all seasons of the old show combined....

Quantum Leap

Macgyver

Knight Rider

Nowadays the reboots can't depend on just one actor to carry the whole show anymore. It's incredibly exhausting on one guy to carry a whole episode for a season. It ruined Scott Bakula's first marriage. Times had change.

Imagine NCIS with one guy who did it all? No ensemble/team? Hard to imagine nowadays.

While that is true (such as Flash and Arrow having a big team, for example), I think they were saying this is most people we have seen AT THE LAB where the Quantum Leap project was being monitored, within the show.

This may be more people than who work at STAR Labs. They might even have a security guard!

Big reveals - this is happening because Donald Bellisario decided it was time for the show to return. He gave Universal permission.

I thought Bellisario passed away a couple years ago? Or is this older info?

Uhm, I can't say I get what are you saying. In the old show was implied that a LOT of people worked on the QL project, but we simply almost never saw them. By memory, uhmmm, that time someone took Al's place and a couple of security guards when a leaped escaped?

He is very much alive! That interview with Deborah Pratt, his ex wife, was done right before I shared it. Last month.

No one has shared yet that the new show will be on Mondays 10pm/ 9pm central.

It’s interesting that Scott Bakula’s new NBC show UNBROKEN is not on their fall schedule. So far the network has not committed beyond the Pilot. It’s possible it could be a mid season debut or saved to the following season. Not sure what that means in terms of its production until they decide. He may have free time until than...

What happened to all of Ziggy's colored, plastic box interfaces with laser light beams?! :p

As cheesy as the original production design is and how 90s it looks... it feels much more stylish than the still from the new show.

Nevertheless, I'm really looking forward to the new QL. Seems we'll be spending more time at Project Quantum Leap during the leaps.

I quite liked the finale...
I did too. What most fans seem to be unaware of is the show was cancelled. It originally was filmed to end on a cliffhanger for the next season. We were going to see Al in the altered future married to Beth. He explains to her that they can not find Sam through the Imaging Chamber. He is convinced the only way to find him is to Quantum Leap himself. Beth agrees with him and is contrived if he survived Vietnam he will return to see her again.

When the late decision was made by NBC to cancel the show Don Bellisario was put in a tough position. He did not want to end on a cliffhanger that had no resolution. So he ended it with Sam restoring Al and Beth’s marriage in the past. Plus the awkward wording “ Sam Becket never returned home” Notice Beckett was misspelled. Which shows what a quick last minute addition that was. It was obviously a hasty way of saying Sam’s story is not over yet.

Rumors of that alternate ending were out there in QL fandom for decades. Only a few years ago it turned up online in rough condition -

Oh yeah, I understand this, and the finale itself was pretty good, I just would like Sam's story to end with something more than a title card that's on screen for a few seconds. The new series is the perfect opportunity to give us that.
One thing I've wondered ever since I saw that, is if Sam's still aging, and will eventually die during a leap, or if leaping has stopped the movement of time for him and he'll be leaping around and around for eternity.
