Why was Sisko chosen to command DS9?

Mike Have-Not

Captain
Captain
Why do you think Sisko was chosen for this assignment. In-universe explanation-wise.

He doesn't seem to have any particular past experience with Bajor or Bajorans. He doesn't seem to have ever been in command of a space station before.

What about his service record, or experience, would lead Starfleet to believe he was the best man for this particular job?

Just wanted to hear some opinions :-)

Welll... we know Admiral Leyton lobbied for him to get the job, for one thing. Though that doesn't really tell us much.

But we've got to remember that the posting of DS9 was basically a low priority posting. Sisko had basically been promoted since his old captain adored him. Plus I guess being mentored by Curzon would give him some kind of diplomacy in helping Bajor enter the Federation.

And basically my reckoning of why he wasn't replaced after the wormhole being discovered was if he was taken away the Bajorians would have gone balistic as you had taken away their religious icon.

Sisko did spend some time at the Utopia Planitia shipyards, he might have been in charge/second in command of a station or drydocks that were part of the yards so would have experience in administrating a space station.

When Sisko got the job, Deep Space Nine and Bajor were virtual back-water nowhere postings. The Wormhole had yet to be discovered and nobody had any idea of how vital the installation would become to the defense of the entire Alpha Quadrant.

His former commanding officer was now an ultra-high ranking Admiral who lobbied hard for him to get an upgraded position. So Starfleet basically gave in and promoted Sisko, but to a place they regarded as low-priority.

the prophets might have pulled some strings to get their offspring where they needed him to confront their pah-wraith buddies.

Okay, here's my 'in-universe' explanation - but I'll warn you it doesn't paint Sisko in the most flattering, heroic light. Here goes:

Commander Sisko is a faithful First Officer aboard the USS Saratoga living a happy life with his wife and young son when his world is ripped apart by the Locutus lead Borg. He becomes obsessed and unstable in his desire to exact revenge on the Borg. He is none to silent about his feelings toward Picard and is vocal in his opposition in Starfleet's position to keep Picard as Captain of the Federation flagship.

Sisko requests promotion and wants a ship of his own. Because he is viewed as unstable and focused on revenge for the death of his wife, he is denyed promotion and a ship of his own. Instead, Starfleet puts his engineering skills to use by giving Sisko an "out-of-the-way' post helping to rebuild the fleet at the Utopia Planetia shipyards.

Sisko, still obsessed with defeating the Borg, makes the best of this position by designing the USS Defiant, under the premise that he is designing a small escort ship. In reality he is designing the most heavily armed warship Starfleet has ever seen. When Starfleet realizes what he's actually doing, they mothball the Defiant project. They then assign Sisko to Deep Space Nine, the furthest sector they can think of while still keeping an eye on him. His mission is to prepare Bajor, which they consider a long term backwater project, for Federation membership. The time Sisko spends with a quiet, contemplative and spiritual people will do him some good in overcoming his grief toward his wife's death. In addition, his engineering and diplomatic experience on Utopia Planetia and Pelios Station will help prepare DS9 as a makeshift 'starbase' for travelers to the region when Bajor eventually loosens their spiritual beliefs a bit and becomes an official Federation planet.

Of course, everything changes shortly after Sisko arrives - and the rest ...is history.

He didn't work on the Defiant until well after being posted to DS9.

Actually he did. Though I will concede that Starfleet was well aware of the Defiant project, which I had forgotten.

From The Search, Part I

SISKO: Desperate times breed desperate measures. Five years ago, Starfleet began exploring the possibility of building a new class of starship. This ship would have no families, no science labs, no luxuries of any kind... it was designed for one purpose only -- to fight and defeat the Borg. (beat) The Defiant was the prototype... the first ship in what would've been a new Federation battle fleet.
And in the episodes Defiant and Through the Looking Glass Sisko mentions that he helped design it.

SISKO: I was in charge of the shipyard where the Defiant was built... I helped design it. I know her vulnerabilities, her weaknesses.

IIRC, Starfleet built the Defiant as a response to the rising thread of the Dominion, and Sisko took a temporary leave of absence from DS9 to speed design and production.

Umm, the very post you quote notes that "The Search Part 1" specifies that Defiant was the prototype for a new Federation battle fleet to counter the Borg.

^ Exactly. The Defiant was repurposed after the destruction of the USS Odyssey. It was always intended to be a starship to combat the Borg.

My thought:

Sisko was so distraught by the death of his wife, he wanted somewhere without a lot of 'drama.' The only reason he is going on is because of Jake, his son.

My guess is that he probably could have gotten a ship of his own, but his wife's death hit him so hard. (Other than that, Sisko is the upstanding officer we all him to be; of course things get more dramatic as time goes on---and he gets to find a new lease on life).

This is how Admiral Leyton picked Sisko for the job. Leyton gathers up a bunch of Captains and Commanders and lines them up standing at attention.
Leyton: Alright, I need a volunteer for this crappy job at a backwater no-name place called DS9.

All the Captains and Commanders except Sisko, who' s slow that day for some reason, takes one step back leaving Sisko standing at the forefront.

Except... wasn't he, like, really close to quitting Starfleet altogether before he found the wormhole?

You're right. He was offered a job constructing 'orbital habitats' on Earth. (Obviously he was well qualified to work with space stations.)

Sisko loses his wife at Wolf 359. He is now a single father raising his only child. Due to losing his wife, he most likely asks Starfleet to assign him somewhere in the Sol system so he can raise his son close to home and have help from his own father. Starfleet agrees, deciding to put his engineering skills to good use at Utopia Planitia by assigning him to the team that is to develop a new starship to combat the Borg. That ship is the Defiant. Starfleet eventually scraps the project because they feel the Borg threat is not as severe as once thought and the fact the ship is way overpowered and armed for its size and that it nearly ripped itself apart in test flights. We do not know exactly when the Defiant Project was ended but we can assume it was shortly before he was reassigned to DS9. His former commanding officer, now Admiral Leyton, recommends him for command of DS9 and Starfleet agrees. Sisko is to work with Bajor to help rebuild their world and prepare them for Federation membership. Sisko doesn't agree with his new assignment but goes anyway as it is an order from Starfleet. Of course, he is now contemplating resigning his commission and moving back to Earth to raise Jake. Picard even said to Sisko that he thought he would be eager for a change after being at Utopia Planitia for so long. He discovers the wormhole and even though Bajor may now be a more prominent port in the quadrant, Starfleet doesn't feel the desire to replace him and by the time they do feel the desire to, they can't because Bajor would be pissed.

It would make sense that StarFleet didn't view DS9 as that important at first. Hence sending an officer at commander rank in charge of the station.

The idea that the Bajoran Prophets had something to do with it is intriguing too.
