Why is raktajino so awesome?

If pretty much everyone on DS9 is drinking them, then it's gotta be good. Is it made of an amazing Klingon coffee bean or is it regular Earth coffee with Klingon liqueur (from one of the novels)? Anyone tried to make one?

Frankly, what's always confused me is we've almost never seen Klingons drink raktajino. They always go for bloodwine, or, in the case of Worf, prune juice. Yet many of DS9's non-Klingon residents just love raktajino.

I can only think of one case where Klingons are mentioned to be drinking it, in 'Trials and Tribble-ations', which is inferred by a remark the waitress makes when the undercover Niners ask for the drink. And the one time it's mentioned is when it's a vital point to setting up a joke.

So what gives?

Maybe raktajino is like chow mein or orange chicken, in that it was created by Klingons to get people in the Federation interested in Klingon cuisine with them being freaked out over the 'weirder' stuff like gagh or birds nest soup.

Alternatively, Starbucks.

I think the heroes were simply so traumatized by the coffee that the Cardassian replicators originally pumped out that they all went looking for a replacement, any replacement. And even though O'Brien got the things working right after "Babel", the heroes never trusted standard coffee again.

Except, of course, O'Brien himself.

And raktajino is what Klingon infants drink. Adult warriors only use it for giving bloodwine that appetizing brown hue.

It had 5 times the caffeine of Earth coffee?

Actually I remember reading that - I think in the DS9 Companion.

If you order it in Vegas it's a double espresso

Because it's got no ooomph to the name like Blood Wine (wouldn't put it past Klingons to mix real blood - maybe of those they killed - with Wine to get that drink).

Coffee is for relaxing times or when you are in the office.. when have you seen a relaxed Klingon on leisure time picking up a good book and a hot cup of coffee besides him?

I'd definitely try it. I am a big coffe drinker, so any caffienated coffee style drink sounds good to me.

Bloodwine, on the other hand, sounds like roulette to me. Big risk drinking that concoction.
