Spoilers Why I think Discovery is ending after season 4

Not open for further replies.
One reason to phase out Disco would be to push the other shows more. PIC, LDS, and soon SNW, have the potential to be more successful and 'liked' generally, and then Disco might end to put more focus on those shows.

Any delays in announcing S5 can be because of the ongoing negotiations with Netflix, the pandemic, having to balance budgets between DSC and SNW and ramping up production on SFA, which could require something to be postponed a bit.

As mentioned, the production staff has talked about looking forward to working on the next season.

Tilly mentioned that she would come back to visit Discovery even while she was an instructor at Starfleet Academy. While some of that is probably just foreshadowing later appearances this season, I think it's also referring to guest stints on the show in future seasons.

There's a stigma of failure attached to ending on four seasons like Enterprise did (at least within the modern Trek franchise where they mostly last seven seasons) that I think they would want to avoid.

The show is doing well in streaming so there's no reason to cancel it now.

With a presumably more static show like Starfleet Academy in this era it might help to have a companion series running that can tell the more traditional starship exploration stories.

If this was truly the final season they would be building that up in promotional materials to get more people to watch. "Come see the epic final season of Star Trek Discovery."

This is all just a bit too Midnight's Edge doom and gloom without evidence. Not saying the OP had any malicious intent behind it, just that there's nothing to support this being the final season. I mean, it's possible, but I would say unlikely at this point.

I think season 5 will be the final season. So far this doesn't feel like a season where your trying to wrap things up or bring closure. I think one more season and then they switch to the Academy show as the series representing this time period of Trek. Burnham will become God, Federation President as side jobs to being the ships Captain. Saru becomes Captain of the Voyager ship. Tilly of course will be working at the Academy. Grudge becomes the ships new first officer. Adira and Gray become ambassadors to earth as Earth finally rejoins the Federation. Stamets and Culber die saving the universe but since Burnham is a God she is able to create a paradise afterlife for them to spend all of eternity together. Book joins Starfleet. Everyone else stays in their jobs.

Hey! No Midnight’s Edge nonsense here. Just seeing what I’m seeing and wondering.

Personally - moving towards a “West Wing” show would be very interesting to me. Perhaps a reference to “cowboy diplomacy” thrown in here and there. Don’t really need galaxy ending threats any more.

Burnham will become God.
From TNG's Hide & Q --

RIKER: We're growing. Something about us compels us to learn, explore.

Q: Yes, the human compulsion. And unfortunately for us, it is a power which will grow stronger century after century, aeon after aeon.

RIKER: Aeons. Have you any idea how far we'll advance?

Q: Perhaps in a future that you cannot yet conceive, even beyond us.

--------

Q just got the timeframe wrong.

PIC has an unenviable path to take before it becomes popular. The first season was a mess. There were moments of brilliance, but it was buried in terrible script writing and characterizations.

I don't think he'll mind me sharing this - Chad, if you're out there and you feel otherwise? Apologies! But since it was in a public tweet reply, I'm leaning "it's fine."

Now, obviously, this means almost nothing. But I do think it's a good sign that an editor on the show would be willing to say this much. "It's anyone's guess when they'll announce" does not confirm that Mr. Rubel knows the show is coming back; however, it does suggest he has no substantial reason to fear the worst here - in that case, I doubt he'd have replied.

I thought they cancelled it after Season 1 but had to keep making it for "contractual reasons"

It's true. Still better off than Picard which was cancelled before ever being made. For the best I suppose. I have a bad feeling they would have done something bad like brutally kill Icheb and end on a space tentacle monster but thankfully that never happened. Could you imagine the sheer fucking hubris if they tried that.

The title is self explanatory. A few thoughts

. No announcement of Season 5
. Burnham has completed her journey from officer to convict to redeemed officer to Captain. No further place to go.
. They started and ended the Klingon war
. They introduced Pike and the SNW spin-off is a go
. She reconciled with Spock
. She defeated Control and went to the “future” to ensure that. 23rd century story ended
. She figured out and cleared the cause of the Burn
. She found a source of Dilithium for the whole galaxy enabling the Federation to reform/grow
. They are building a fleet of spore drive ships now so their tech will not be unique
. They moved Tillly off from First Officer to the Academy perhaps for a spin-off
. Saru is now an independent player and can get a show of his own
. Vulcan / Nivar has rejoined and she’s on the “committee”
. The anomaly needs to be defeated but why would Discovery be specially good at that other than the spore drive? Although I bet Book dies trying or something.

So I think there’s no reason that the show is needed or unique. And I am enjoying it.

Perhaps we could see:
. An Academy show
. A Saru show to continue the timeframe
. A “West Wing” show with the fed President/ Michael as her agent

I got similar feelings about it as well. I mean, Season 3's finale felt like a series finale to me. The story of Discovery is the story of Burnham and we've seen this character's journey. Granted, we have yet to see her have kids, grow old, and die, but in terms of her character evolution we've gotten to see a great deal of that, and I'm not sure that there's much more to see that doesn't necessarily result in diminishing returns. Perhaps Season 4 is sort of like Babylon 5's fifth season where JMS had finished a lot of the major storylines and for some the fifth season felt a bit adrift (I personally liked Season 5, but I'm not a diehard B5 fan either; I still haven't looked at every episode, or seen a good deal of the episodes in order).

If Burnham hadn't become captain at the end of Season 3 there would still be that carrot to dangle for the character and audience to see her fulfill her destiny, promise, what have you. Even now, she could lose the captaincy, but her regaining it isn't as compelling to me. She doesn't seem to need the captaincy in a way that Kirk did.

As for the rest of the series, now that Season 4 is starting to delve into rebuilding the Federation there's not much space left for them to go with that storyline, in part because I don't think they find that interesting, they have invested in it enough already last season (planting seeds that could be sprouting this season outside of Ni'Var, a storyline I do enjoy) and will be tempted to create another all consuming mystery each season instead of finding the drama of exploring various planets' societies and politics, basically turning DISCO into a political space drama reminiscent of The Expanse. While I do like DISCO's characters more than many in The Expanse, I don't think the DISCO writers have the same interests (or books to guide them) in create that compelling kind of world building while also developing an ensemble of characters.

I could see a Tilly/Academy series, or even a Captain Saru series; I would rather see Captain Saru than a Tilly-led series, but truthfully I would be fine with them closing the book (pun sort of intended) on DISCO. But I don't want it unceremoniously canceled.

Not that I’m worried because if it does end it ends and I’ll have enjoyed what we’ve gotten. But I see no real concern other than a lot of idle speculation. There’s some evidence to say it will be renewed. There’s some evidence to suggest it might be canceled. I choose to wait and see.

Besides as I get older and seasons of TV get shorter, I find myself not being as connected as I was to shows and their casts a decade or two ago.

The show was already cancelled. It's just taking along time to die. Like another franchise with a star named Michael. That of course being Halloween. Just when you think it's over and it's safe to turn on the tv again, Burnham shows up with another whispering speech.

"We're through the looking glass now..."

Main reason I dont think its ending is modern shows absolutely love bigging up the "final season" for the ratings. I see no reason to leave people hanging if CBS/Para know its the end.

The Expanse is on its "final season" even though we know there are 3 books worth of stuff if someone else wants to take it up
