Why humans will never colonize space

Two words: frozen embryos.
:wtf: Cosmic rays wouldn't have any effect just because the embryos are frozen?
The implication being that if it is impractical to shield your entire ship then you can probably get away with just shielding the freezers.

Yup. Embryos can be frozen more or less indefinitely, and since they don't move around they can be kept in a heavily shielded chamber. There's also the advantage of being able to bring along a lot more genetic diversity than if you had to rely on procreation during or after the journey.

You could have embryos from tens or even hundreds of thousands of people in frozen storage while only having a few hundred or thousand colonists, and still have a genetically viable population. Embryo implantation is done pretty routinely today so it shouldn't be too hard to accomplish during the journey (unless implantation is a huge issue) and probably even easier once you make planetfall.

I think it's just shortsighted to only look at having sex in space when there are other ways to address the problem.

Yes, radiation will prevent us from colonizing space-- if colonizing space meant turning the ISS into a condo. There are no barriers to space colonization that can't be solved with sufficiently advanced technology.

As for sex in space: Google "Three Dolphin Club." :mallory:

technological advances often make fools of those who make predictions like this.

Colonization of space is a NECESSITY, not a want. Resources on any particular planet are finite. The human race must expand onto other worlds to grow and prosper.

We'll just have to stop fighting each other long enough to start the effort.

There's a much better article on this topic in the latest issue of Popular Science.
