Why do places close/close early on Sundays?

Chick-fil-A is closed here in NC on Sundays and I think it is great that their employees get to crash out once a week.

Wait...

So Wendy's employees work 7 days a week there?

And Chick-fil-A employees work 6 days a week?

Crazy.

You tell us, Trekker, you work for a grocery store. Why do stores close early on Sunday?

Yup. And from what I have read, it isn't hurting their profits, either. They definitely have their decisions grounded in religious beliefs, as you can tell by the article.

OT, but they have these little chicken sandwiches for breakfast, on teeny rolls that have a sweet frosting lightly brushed over them that are really, really good.

That's weird. Why would the fast food places want to pay overtime? Wouldn't it be cheaper to hire more employees instead of making their employees work over 40 hours a week?

Or does everyone work 5 hours a day or something?

Still?

Are we still on some old Jonny Tremainian sabbath idea that if you have your store open on a Sunday so people can buy a DVD that God will have you dunk your hand in a smelter full of molten metal?

Seriously? Monday-Saturday most stores are open to 9 or 10pm, but apparently on Sundays people only need to buy things up uintil six in the evening? And some places don't even dare OPEN on Sundays at all!

Come-on! It's 21st damn century. Open the damn stores till late on Sunday!
It's to inconvenience the people who only have Sundays off. ;)

you mean the chick-fil-a's there are open on sundays? I thought it was policy from corporate that all stores "remember the sabbath and keep it holy" it's actually printed on the walls in some of thier locations

To my knowledge Chick-fil-A is closed on Sundays. As mentioned it is posted in the restaurants as a day of rest.

What? No.

What I mean is that people around here tend to work 5 days a week with 2 days off. In other words, the people who work Saturday might have Monday off.

Opali is saying that people in N.C. work all 7 days, which is what I was calling crazy.

Human beings work in those places... maybe they'd like some time off.

There's 6 other days in the week.

Small places without the man power to arrange people to have their 2 days off in a week and still keep the store staffed? Sure.

Best-Buy? I presume they've the resources and man-power to keep the store sufficently staffed and to make sure everyone gets their two days off a week.

My store is open 24/7/364 We're only closed on Christmas Day, close early on Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve.

What? Wait, No. I was saying "yup" to the fact that all employees in all Chick-fil-A restaurants have Sundays off. Not that poor Wendy's employees have to be flipping burgers seven days a week. I was focusing on the topic of Sundays off and didn't make clear my comment. My bad.:)

My point was that I thought it nice that all Chick-Fil-A employees and all C-f-A restaurants close one day per week. As opposed to Wendys, which is open every day.

Heaven forbid any employees should have one measly evening off.

I was going to say this, but you beat me to it. My friend was complaining about things closing on Sunday as well (we even got into Chick-fil-a, so this thread is eerie). It's not as important for regular employees, but managers who have to schedule times, having a slot where you don't need a manager and everybody can get off does wonders to making everyone happy. And customers are pretty much used to it, so they don't lose that many customers (they'll just shop other times).

Trekker, the answer is simple. Money. That's all. If the store management thought that there would be enough profit in staying open until 9 on Sunday they would. But, for some businesses like Best Buy, people who shop on Sunday evenings are not believed to spend enough money to justify staying open.

Plus, most catholic and protestant churchs have activities planned on Sunday nights.

We used to close about an hour earlier on Sunday evenings because people were either home preparing for Monay morning (work and school) or doing church related activities.

Some people believe Sunday is a day of rest. Apparently the retailers understand this as well. :)

^^^^^What he said.

It's the same reason malls aren't open until 3 AM.

Ther are Sunday trading laws in force in England and Wales (the Sunday Trading Act 1994), stating that general stores can only be open for no more than 6 consecutive hours between 10am and 6pm on Sunday (the exception is petrol sheds and fast food outlets, it seems, which retain their usual operating hours).

The opening hours restrictions don't seem to apply to Scotland (viva la 24 hour shoppiung at Tesco's ;)), but it's still under the discretion of the local councils or the stores themselves over whether they choose to use Sunday as a day of rest or not, in the case of the stores themselves for purely monetary reasons (running costs for opening the store vs. anticipated magnitude of sales made).

Wendy's are open 7 days, but the employees don't work everyday. Most work 5 days or even less. Corporate places hate, hate, hate to pay overtime. I would imagine there are a lot more part timers than full timers.

There are six people who work at my shop. We open 10-4 on Sundays with two people staffing it and it's not even worth it, we're lucky if we do one contract all day (I work at a mobile phone shop). No one goes shopping in my town on Sundays.

I guess it really depends on the area. I can't think of a single place that closes that early on Sundays (maybe an hour early, if anything, which still keeps them open until about 9pm).

We still have Blue Laws around here. The liquor stores are closed and the supermarkets put big cages around the beer and wine. :rommie: And most of the stores have reduced hours. It's kind of silly when you think that it's the weekend when most people have time to shop. If I was a small business and needed to close one day a week, I'd make it Wednesday or Thursday.
