Why did Spock wear a beard on the second season of Disovery?

Did Spock wear a beard on Discovery because the writers got inspired evil Spock in the mirror universe wore a beard in the original series?

It's been a while since I've seen season 2 of Discovery. But I do admit the beard Spock wore was/is cool. It kinda reminds me of mirror Spock.

Why does anyone need a reason to grow a beard?

The Trek Beard to Rule All Trek Beards came into being because Jonathan Frakes simply didn't shave after Season 1 of TNG finished filming, and the showrunners liked the look.

He had been locked up and a fugitive if I recall correctly. Not really time for grooming.

The season did take things a bit too far wanting to save The Moment we see shaved (and uniformed) Spock until the finale scene. Even if we accept he kept the beard and continued to wear civvies while on Disco because he was still on leave of absence, it's definitely a stretch he kept the beard and never wore a uniform at all for the four months when the Enterprise was being repaired at the end of the finale, during which he was attending inquiries at Starfleet Command. Even if he were on a leave of absence, I'm pretty sure he'd still be required to wear a uniform while attending an official inquiry conducted by a flag officer. Pike and Una did. To say nothing of the fact he would have been expected to maintain the same grooming standards as when he was on duty.

But then they really wanted to end the episode with The Moment of seeing shaved Spock walk onto the Enterprise bridge in uniform and take the science station, so that's what they went with.

I actually wonder why Vulcans would shave at all. It's not logical to devote several minutes a day to a purely cosmetic procedure.

I think Ethan Peck Spock looks better with the beard than without. The beard hides the face, so it makes me not constantly think, "You're not Leonard Nimoy!" It's not Ethan Peck's fault, but my mind goes to that by default unfortunately. Then they shaved his face and left him with those awful sideburns, which they still can't get right.

Long story short: I'm glad Disco Spock had the beard.

Yeah they just wanted him to look unkempt and it's an easy visual.
I definitely don't think there was any Mirror Universe comparison. For one, you'd think they'd have done a goatee if it was intentional, but they'd already done Mirror Universe the previous season and swapped a guy, and really the story only means anything if it's real Spock and real Michael anyway.
