The last time I had a birthday party - well, the last time someone organized a party for my birthday is a better way of putting it, because I never threw my own birthday parties - was thirteen years ago.
At the time I worked until midnight, with a long way home, then I needed to have dinner, so even though I had my birthday off, I didn't get into bed until 4 a.m. and naturally, I wanted to sleep in on what was not just my birthday, but my first day off in a week.
And I wanted to treat myself, get the food I want, and relax. So, after sleeping until noon, I went grocery shopping, get a pint of Ben & Jerry for "breakfast" and the items I needed for the dinner I wanted, so it was like 2 p.m. when I actually had my ice cream breakfast.
But my family had organized a "get-together" for me in the afternoon at my brother's family home. We hadn't talked about when exactly, just the afternoon, so I figured I'd ride my bike over there at about 4 p.m.
But then my brother called at a quarter past three to ask where I was, they were all gathered and waiting. So, I rode my bike over, and all my brothers, my mom, my sister-in-law and my nephews were there making a fuss over me. Then there was cake, which I normally like, but I was still full from that ice cream, so I wasn't all over it. And, of course, I was still kind of tired from working all week, and to boot, their gift was a concert ticket that I did. Not. Want. I appreciated the thought, I understood why they thought I'd like the band, but, well, I didn't.
So, I got there late, only ate a minimum amount of cake, wasn't very talkative, and I didn't like the gift. The mood was pretty bad all around.
Ultimately, my brothers confronted me, and I told them that I didn't want any of this, that while I loved all of them, I didn't want to spend my birthday with obligations to others.
So then we agreed they wouldn't organize any more birthday parties for me.
I still celebrate my own way, by taking the day off work, sleeping in, having Ben & Jerry's for breakfast, relaxing watching movies and TV, and having a special dinner. Some years my mom took me out for dinner, which was more to my liking than a party with a lot of people.
