White Collar question

sojourner

Admiral
In Memoriam
So, in the last few episodes it's been obvious that Tiffany Thiesens (sp?) scenes have all been greenscreened in. Also, she has appeared a little bloated in the face (not in a fat way, more of an illness way). Anyone know what the deal is?

She was well into her pregnancy and shot all her scenes in advance in front of a green screen.

makes sense, was wondering what was up with that, and why she hasn't been in this season much, except for the odd greenscreen shots...

On the subject of green screen, can I just say how much I hate lazy green screening, like what White Collar is doing? If they made any attempt to match the lighting and sound design with the supposed location, they completely failed. They both looked like they were sitting in a photography studio and sounded like they were talking in a small room. Quite irksome. :)

:wtf: She couldn't be pregnant on the show? I think that would have been awesome. Peter handing off the baby to Moz while he and Neil chase the bad guys and El does her event planning. :)

Peter would never trust Mozzie with his baby, though Elle might.

As for not using her pregnancy on the show, I suspect it's a timing issue. The start of the season was supposed to be set not long after the events of the previous season's finale, so it would be hard to explain her suddenly being very pregnant.

^Actually in the first episode of the season Neil had apparently been back in jail for at least a month. They could easily have extended that long enough to explain her pregnancy.

I don't think so. They would've had to drag out Neal's incarceration to six months or more, and that's a long haul. The investigation of the plane crash would probably be over, a lot of other stuff would've changed and moved on... it would've been too radical an interpolation in the planned storyline just to accommodate a real-life pregnancy that had nothing to do with what the writers intended for their show. Just because some shows find it feasible to incorporate actresses' pregnancies, that doesn't make it obligatory. In this case, it would've required too many alterations to the story plans, and for no valid reason.

And really, if they did decide to have Peter and Elle have a baby, that would've been the worst possible way to do it. Their whole process of deciding to start a family and getting pregnant happening off camera and then suddenly getting dumped on us as a fait accompli that happened months and months earlier? That's just not right, for something so big to be skipped over to such a great extent. If Thiessen had been only a month or two along at the start of filming for the season, then maybe they could've accommodated it in the storyline, but she was just too far along for it to be a good idea here.

Well, I was kidding about Mozzie being turned into a nanny. He can barely take care of himself.

Yeah, pregnancy. They're using pretty much the same tactic they used in SG-1 when Amanda tapping was preggers where they'd only show same on a computer screen for a couple eps.

It's a time-honored tradition to hide actresses' pregnancy. There were a number of ST:TNG episodes where Gates McFadden was only shot from the chest up or in a loose lab coat. Same with Roxann Dawson on Voyager when she was suddenly wearing a loose engineer's vest for no in-story reason -- and briefly had a "holographic" pregnancy in a holodeck story. (The character did get pregnant on the show years later, though I'm not sure if that corresponded with a real pregnancy for the actress or not.)

Naturally, there's a whole TV Tropes page about it.
