When Universes Collide (Dr. Who x Star Trek)

Beyond the big Star Trek Universe panels at San Diego Comic Con later this month, there’s another featured Trek event scheduled for the annual genre bash in California — this time, with another big sci-fi franchise along for the ride.

Star Trek franchise boss Alex Kurtzman will be joined by Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies on Saturday, July 27 at 5:30PM (Room 6A) for a panel set to kick off a co-franchise “Intergalactic Friendship Day” event on July 30.

Like I said in thr Davies thread, as much as I would love to see such a crossover, I'm managing my expectations. I would not be at all be surprised if it's nothing more than a fun conversation between the two showrunners, gushing over each other's work and respective franchises.

The only actual kind of crossover I would expect is in print or video game. Or a cruise.

I would love to be wrong. So we'll see.

The Doctor and Ruby mentioned Star Trek early in the season and in Star Trek Prodigy...

Dal commented that "this 'timey wimey' stuff makes my head hurt."

That's it. That's the crossover.

But this reminds me, didn't RTD say something about an episode title of Picard season 3 coincidentally being a line of dialogue in the new season of Who or something like that? Did anyone catch that?

I remember Davies saying that. Most of the titles from season 3 are pretty common (aside from the thematic nature of the premiere and finale titles) with only "17 Seconds" being the only one that would feel like a funny coincidence. Not sure what he might have been referring ro.

I like Doctor Who and I like Star Trek, but I wouldn't want the two to mix in an official live action story, just because Doctor Who is too fantasy. If they have a crossover, then every bit of supernatural weirdness and timey wimey nonsense in Doctor Who also becomes Star Trek canon. I already have a hard enough time dealing with the mushroom dimension, I don't need it to go even more off the rails!

Star Trek already has its own version of a TARDIS anyway so there's nothing to worry about.

Star Trek has Q.

Eh — for a single story, I could buy them establishing that the two universes are just two strands among billions unraveling off from the giant ball of timey-wimey that is the Time War/Temporal Wars, now revealed as simply different aspects of the same bigger-than-you-imagined conflict (with entire factions coming into or out of existence, depending on what timeline you end up existing in). I wouldn’t want either franchise to then go on and pretend they’re the same universe long term — but for a single fun story, sure, why not? It’s not like Trek’s cosmology is actually much less fantastic than Who’s, it just disguises this slightly (slightly!) better.

That's 100% what I expect. Mutual gushing. :)

I could see a one-off event movie with a Doctor and companion having an adventure with the Strange New Worlds or Lower Decks crew, if all of the legalities and logistics can be sorted out. It's the logistics that might be the most intractable--who gets to stream the thing? As for crew, I have no preference, though I think Lower Decks might be more fun, and I'd be super intrigued if it were a live-action LD, like "Those Old Scientists."

That’s what I was thinking. LD or Prodigy - animated seems a much easier way to do it, just like it’s been done in comics form before.

Of course, given that DW involves time-travel, if such a story is a success, the Doctor could turn up on SNW or any series that may or may not follow Picard (or Discovery).

I also thought either of the animated shows are the best way to go. Prodigy, for its season two developments, or Lower Decks, for all things Mariner reacting to The Doctor and everyone reacting to the TARDIS.

But, again, it's probably all academic.

I'm sure there are multiple hurdles to jump over before Davies finally gets his live-action crossover. I'm not holding my breath.

My money is on is another comic book event that I'll never buy, likely Ncuti and the crew of the Discovery.

Although, I did buy this as I simply couldn't resist.

Maybe an animated short trek? Probably easier to do than live action.
Like those non-canon short-short Treks? I could see that, actually.
I have the lunchbox. I forgot I had it until I was looking for something in the kitchen and opened the cabinet over the fridge. 😂
It's a nice piece. I still have the Enterprise and TARDIS inside mine, as I haven't had the heart to remove them.
