Wheel Of Time- Season 2 (Amazon)

FreezeC77

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
So the first 3 episodes of the show dropped a few days ago on September 1st. They're actually fairly long. Each basically a full hour (altho a bit of a recap at the start). Still about 5-10 mins longer than most of the episodes in S1.

I'll put the actual events in spoilers although I will say I feel like the actual production value for S2 is significantly better than S1. I've read some things that S1 had a lot more COVID restrictions as it had started filming basically a couple months before COVID broke out in 2020 and stopped everything for basically a year (also may be one of the reasons Mat's actor left). When the filming resumed it was rushed and under travel restrictions still and used green screens (that didn't look very realistic) with similar impacts to the special effects and music as well.

S2 looks markedly better.

Now for the spoilers
There are significant changes and alterations to the books. Which were expected. There was no chance of adapting such a massive amount of text into a TV show without major changes and condensing. So I try to be understanding when those changes happen as long as the story is progressing in a reasonably similar manner.

Not that happy the show continues to keep everyone separated, which I think is partially fall-out from how they had to write out Mat's character because reasonably at least him and Perrin should have been together.

I'm still very much unimpressed by Rand's actor. Which is bad because Rand is the main character... Although the show certainly has attempted to lessen his screen time. The flip-side is the two significant characters paired with him were fantastic. The actor playing Logain continues to be very good and Natasha O'Keefe as Selene.

Selene book spoiler
Obviously there were complaints that the character described by Robert Jordan as 'the most beautiful woman in the world' more or less does not live up to the visual expectation once a real person was cast in the role... but I worry more about the performance and Natasha O'Keeffe was great

Those playing the Aes Sedai continue to generally be pretty good. Interested to see how Verin in the show is compared to the books.

Also the show is obviously not going to be keeping minor characters alive the same way the books did. Uno went out pretty gruesomely. He made it through the entirety of the books.

Speaking of Uno's death... The Seanchan's introduction was pretty fierce and done very well... which is a shame because I would have liked to have gotten more time with Perrin and his companions.

The Nynaeve stuff... Let me say I haven't read the books in a long time and there were A LOT of books so I'm sure I don't remember things entirely. I know the arches thing was from the books, I'm not sure how exact it was compared to the books... but as a TV ADAPTION. I think having Rand go through something VERY SIMILAR in like the last episode or 2nd to last episode of S1 and then immediately in the first episode of S2 having Nynaeve go through an alternate present/future thing comes across as a bit of a redux.

Still Nynaeve's actress Zoe Robbins did a fantastic job in the scenes.

As a book reader who was quite critical of season 1 ("I expect changes, but you chose to change *that*?!) I too am positively surprised by the step up in season 2. Whoever is in charge of casting is doing an excellent job and the pacing of the story feels a lot more smooth. I am also having a great deal of fun seeing all the book fan reviews saying they love what the show is doing with Liandrin and Alanna, and being surprised at themselves for that. My one gripe so far is "I thought Cairhien would look a lot bigger" and as such I have none with the story. :D

I might do a proper review once I've had the time to watch it again.

I have to admit that even in truncated form I don't have any optimism that they'll be able to tell the complete story before Amazon cancels them, which is why I've given it a pass.

If I'm wrong then I look forward to watching the whole thing years from now.

It's a good step up over season 1. Casting is indeed good. The introduction of such characters like Bayle Domon, Elayne, Verin, Ingtar and Selene was done very well. Elayne really was brought to life just like she is in the book, in only a few scenes. Verin's dialogue was very sharp.

I also liked the way they introduced sword forms and re-introduced the Aiel war, through the interaction between Rand and (show-only) character Errol.

Show Selene is also an improvement over the book version.

I've only read the first book, and coming in as someone with no idea what to expect, I really enjoyed the first two episodes. They're taking the old characters in some interesting new directions, and intro some cool new characters.

The closest I've come is reading the synopsis on wikipedia. My first thought was, "this sounds stupid." Maybe the books are better reads than the plot summary. Is the show good beyond "I just like it because of the books?" Because I'm pretty sure I wouldn't like the books and I'm not looking to invest in another snooze fest like that LotR series.

Some book readers (quite a lot, actually) don't like it or hate it because it doesn't follow the books enough (for their taste).

However, the changes it makes are usually necessary (the story as written is unfilmable) and sometimes actually an improvement. Not all changes are positive of course, and the finale of season 1 was disappointing for a number of reasons (some Covid and actor related, some due to discutable changes by the showrunners/writers).

One of the changes needed is that characters are consolidated so that actors get more to do (and less of them have to be hired), which can be very positive if they're named Fares Fares or Kate Fleetwood, for example.

However, generally it's a pretty fast paced series IMO. And it does follow a more or less coherent story that is finished, so the showrunners can plan things in advance.

I would dispute the notion that the portion of diehard book fans who hate the TV series is accurately described as being 'quite a lot'.

It's always anecdotic, but those were quite loud at quite some places during season 1. It's also notable that the show barely gathers any interest on this forum, allthough maybe the very serial nature of this show with a continuous story may not be the cup of tea of many Star Trek fans.

Allthough on one of the main WOT book reddits, season 2 is getting a far warmer welcome than season 1 did. This show may yet hit its stride.

It's hardly a snooze fest. Every episode is action packed and I think you do get to know the characters fairly well, all things considering.
You don't need to be a book fan to grok the show.
There's plenty of sex and gore to excite anyone without it being too much.
If you can handle 2 seasons of 8 1 hour episodes I think you''ll be ok.

Oh this isn't a family show? I was thinking it was like a Marvel/LOTR level? Is it a GoT kind of thing?
Not GOT level, but in the very first episode you see a guy getting stabbed through the chest from behind. You see trollocs (monsters) eating dead bodies.
The gore is part of the storytelling but it's absolutely not for little kids. Teens would prob be alright with parental supervision. It's also skippable.
There's a sex scene in S1E1 and S2E2, but it's also tame - nothing explicit but impossible to misunderstand.
There's also scattered partial nudity, plenty of side boob, backside and occasional buttocks but that's about it.

The new additions for S2 are really killing it. Natasha O'Keeffe has been great as Lanfear, Meera Syal has been great as Verin, and now one of the 'main' characters is introduced in
Episode 5
Aviendha (played by Ayoola Smart) was massively engaging and interesting and the perfect to compliment the very subdued Perrin.

The smirk she gives when this huge bulking guy moves in front of her to 'protect her' from the others was just so perfect with her knowing how dangerous and deadly she is. The jokes and the manner in which she delivers them is just so perfect.

This season so far has been such a tremendous improvement over the first season and the effects and cinematography likewise have been a big improvement. Yea, there's still obvious scenes where you can see the budget is being kept down, but some of the shots (most especially when they're outdoors) look and feel very immersive.

That conversation between Lanfear and Ishamael was just so perfect. Fares Fares has been really good as Ishamael, especially in this season and the way the two of them were playing off each other was exceptional. I loved Lanfear taking 'shots' at the other Forsaken.

Also shout-out to Katie Leung (Cho Chang from HP movies) appearing as a brown sister ally of Verin.

I really enjoyed it. It gets pretty gory though lol

Any more so than, say, The Walking Dead and Neegan's introduction to Glen and company...?

If you didn't care for the rich world building of LoTR, you won't like WoT. I'm going to go out on a limb and say you probably don't care for Dungeons and Dragons, either...?

Woo! Side-boob! lmao I remember when Dax did some risque stuff and everyone lost their minds. lmao Tame by today's standards.

Haven't seen either.
