Wow. Michael Dorn is the reason Dan Curry was brought on to design the kur'leth. Dorn didn’t like the design the Picard artists had designed him. So he called up Dan.YouTube interview with Doug Drexler and Dan Curry from a virtual convention last week. Curry talks about how he designed the new weapon and has a close look at a mock up if you'd like to know more.
I have a vague recollection of Dan Curry telling the story about the minute Michael Dorn was signed onto DS9, he immediately called Curry up and said "Daniel, I need a new sword."I also didn’t know this, but Dorn is also responsible for the Mek’leth in DS9, he asked Dan to design a sword he could hide on his back. He even went over to Dan’s house to look at different sword designs and test swing them in his backyard haha.
That's a fun job.Wow. Michael Dorn is the reason Dan Curry was brought on to design the kur'leth. Dorn didn’t like the design the Picard artists had designed him. So he called up Dan.

Were they similar to Disco Klingon 'swords'? XDWow. Michael Dorn is the reason Dan Curry was brought on to design the kur'leth. Dorn didn’t like the design the Picard artists had designed him. So he called up Dan.
I don't know about in-character, but actual bat'leths are very impractical weapons. They might look long, but they're not. When you swing one you often end up pointing one of the blades at your own body. If you use it in a two-handed defensive grip (one hand on either side of the back) that is good at blocking things, but then your only real option for offense is to shove forward, putting yourself off balance.Did something happen to Worf’s bat’leth in media? It was one of his few family heirlooms IIRC, but it was rarely actually used. And did he need dispensation to carry around his mek’leth on missions? It’s not like it’s standard issue.
