Site to site transport was used in TOS- all Scotty had to do is set the controls for "small fuzzy things".
Of course a few pet cats some toupees might have inadvertently gone over also...

This is from Deep Space Nine but Worf said(IIRC) the Klingons wiped them out due to how they wreck havoc on ecosystems but Quark had a few at the end of that episode so they may exist again.

Odo brought some home from the past. One assumes it has only been a day or two, since they haven't completely overrun the station yet, nor did the temporal investigations guys encounter one. Or Odo an the others didn't feed them quite as well as the Enterprise and Deep Space K7 did.
