What do you think about the USS Vengeance ? (spoilers, probably)

Belz...

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
I haven't seen a topic on this, so here it is.

When I saw the latest trailers in theatres, I thought "Woah ! Big new ship." and then I looked for some pictures on the net. My first reaction was that this was one ugly ship, but then I realised that this was a good thing.

The Vengeance looks like a dark, galactic-empire version of the Enterprise, something only Section 31 could dream up. So it's 'ugly' but awesome, all at once.

What do you guys think ?

Re: What do you think about the USS Vengeance ?

Why don't they just call it the USS Evil Overlord and paint pictures of puppies being kicked on it while they're at it. News flash... few evil dictators want to be associated with evil symbols.

Re: What do you think about the USS Vengeance ?

Vengeance is silly and lacks any kind of subtlety at all. It's huge, scary looking, black, and strangely enough in it first drops out of warp it makes a noise which sounds like Darth Vader's breathing. Its interior is dimly lit, computer terminals are black, it has a masculine computer voice as opposed to the feminine one the rest of Starfleet uses, and its crew are a bunch of muscular mean and tough looking guys. Seriously, this ship should have just flown a banner with "Bad Guy's Ship" written on it.

Re: What do you think about the USS Vengeance ?

I don't think they were going for subtlety. :)

Clearly. But still, come on! The bad guy's ship shouldn't be so eary to figure out right away. No one would guess looking at random pictures out of context the Reliant is the ship the Enterprise is fighting in TWOK. Even Imperial Star Destroyers, oversized compared to the hero ships they fight don't look nearly as "Evil" is Vengeance does.

Re: What do you think about the USS Vengeance ?

I think it's clear that this timeline is using Next Generation tech. Also it seems that the Vengeance may be what happened to the Excelsior project (hope not.) I suppose the Vengeance was designed for war mainly because of the Narada appearing, seems that the Narada was a huge game changer for everyone.

Re: What do you think about the USS Vengeance ?

I'm getting tired of this "Narada's presence motivated rapid advancement in technology." It just doesn't fit at all. So one starship is destroyed by a mysterious Space Octopus and suddenly Starfleet is building behemoth starships with advanced computers even though this Octopus disappears for 20 years. Guess what, after five years or so of nothing, complacency would have set in.

And then if we take the deleted scenes into account, the Klingons impunded the Space Octopus for twenty years and did nothing with it. "Oh hey, this thing tore a Federation Starship apart in ten minutes, you think we should study it, try to reverse engineer it, or at the very least use it ourselves?" "No leave it on Rura Penthe. If its crew breaks out, they should have easy access to it to make a getaway and kick our asses at the same time."

For that matter, Starfleet Intelligence didn't have any operatives in Klingon space who happen to either visit Rura Penthe or somehow find a database of all the ships impounded there and say "Hey, that looks like the ship that destroyed the Kelvin. We need to get this out of Klingon hands."

Re: What do you think about the USS Vengeance ?

Starfleet and Section 31 hire Khan to design a super warship. It's bizarro world Trek and I love it. The scene where it effortlessly warps up behind the Enterprise was especially cool.

There was a novel in the 90's called Dark Mirror by Diane Duane, which described the Mirror Universe Enterprise-D in such a way it sent chills up your spine. Into Darkness did the same thing visually.

Re: What do you think about the USS Vengeance ?

I guess you could argue that Spock, being he had no moral qualms about handing over a "transwarp beaming formula" could've helped them out, but even then that only goes so far. He's not an expert on starship design, computer networks, weapon design and things like this. He's a scientist and diplomat.

The real reason is technical continuity doesn't matter one bit to the NuTrek people. Transwarp sounds cool so we'll use it. Giant ships look cooler so we'll use those. Flashy advanced weapons look cool so we'll use them too.

This bothers me, and is why I asked the question in another thread. Khan was discovered and thawed out following the destruction of Vulcan. If he designed the Vengeance, he would have done so in, say, 8 months time... which also means it was built in under 8 months' time. Didn't it take several years to build the Enterprise?

That doesn't make sense (I know, I know...). It would have been a bit more "realistic" if Khan had been discovered, say, 10 years after the Kelvin incident.

Humm... still, I think Marcus wanted the Vengeance to have the UFP's enemies go "holy shit !" when they saw it, not the goody-neat-liner appearance of the usual Federation stuff.

Not technology, but militarisation, especially after the second act 25 years later.

I'm not sure that's considered canon, but I took it as the Klingons being unable to gain access to the ship's advanced systems.

For what it's worth, IDW makes fun of the whole thing in the comics. In the MU, Kirk goes to Rura Penthe to take Narada, not believing the Klingons are stupid enough to let it sit there.

Indeed, in the MU the Klingons had just been conquered by the Terran Empire and never once does it occur to them to use the all-powerful Space Octopus which can destroy planets and tear starships apart in a matter of minutes.

Re: What do you think about the USS Vengeance ?

Ugliest Federation ship out there, I know they weren't going for a streamlined pretty look but come on. It's horrible, particularly the part around the deflector dish.

Re: What do you think about the USS Vengeance ?

I think the engineering hull could use a little smoothing over, but paint it white and slap the name "Excelsior" or "Enterprise-A" on it and I'd be cool with it.

Re: What do you think about the USS Vengeance ?

whan I see it I ask myself; there will be a huge black ship in every next movie of star trek?

Re: What do you think about the USS Vengeance ?

I think it should've been named Excelsior. Seriously, the Trek III reference and mirror would've been FABULOUS.

Re: What do you think about the USS Vengeance ?

If they named it Excelcior, I'd wish they didn't crash it. In fact, I wish they hadn't.
