What do you call the folders the waiter/waitress puts your bill into?

I just got back from a dinner party celebrating my parents 50th Wedding Anniversary and my cousins and I started wondering what you call that folder.

I usually try to call it somebody else's problem.

A little Googling suggests it's called a waiter wallet.

I call it indigestion.

As a former server myself, I can proudly say "I haven't the slightest idea." I'm trying to remember what I ever called it if it came up. I probably just referred to it as a "thing."

That's not to say I didn't learn what things were when I worked there. I certainly didn't know what a ramekin was before I started waiting tables.

It's technically called a "check presenter," though we in the industry just call them "books."

Re: What do you call the folders the waiter/waitress puts your bill in

I always called them "check-holders," or "covers."

One local restaurant uses old paperbacks as the check-holders. While I was waiting for them to pick up my credit card, I got to thumb through a very battered copy of "War of the Worlds."

It's not a restaurant bill unless it comes in a faded-green plastic tray with a chip in it and with the bill you get a couple peppermint haed candies that've been sitting in the bottom of a box for a month.

It never occurred to me until this thread that I never even considered a name for them, despite the countless times I've been given one to pay the bill. I guess if I had to call it something, I would use "billfold." I'd just always said "pass me the check" and whomever was sitting nearest to it would hand the check and the folder to me, so I never really needed a separate name for it.

Now I'm trying to think of some other examples of commonly used items where you never really consider the proper name for it.

Yeah, thinking back, I think I would say "book for the check" or something like that. The only problem with "books" is someone might confuse it with "checkbooks."

"Check Presenter" sounds good.

I too, worked in a restaurant while in college. I never gave a thought to what they were called. I'd just print up the check, grab one of those things from the stack at my station, put the check in and then go and gently put it on the table and say "thank you."

If there was no stack I'd ask someone for those "things for the check."

I mean, it's 2014. The only people carrying checkbooks around are 90-years old...and most restaurants don't accept checks anymore anyway. :p

But seriously, guys, they're called "check presenters." That's what it says on the box when you buy them.

^ That looks like a cup of awesome.

Check presenter sounds like what you would call someone who hands you the giant novelty checks on game shows and lottery broadcasts.

A Ramekin is also the metal little cups that restaurants would put sauce, ketchup, or salad dressing in.
