West Wing: Bartlett's Letter to Santos in "Tomorrow" (the finale)

Santos takes a look at the letter and smiles/almost laughs. What was in the letter? Anyone have a screencap or a producer's note?

Maybe someone with the DVD can listen to the commentary and figure it out.

I'm very curious.:vulcan:

It's meant ONLY to be between presidents, therefore we don't get to be in on it.

I like it that way.

Is it a good idea to spoil the final stretch of season 7 in the thread title? :S We know there are people here who haven't seen the show and are just starting to watch it.

Just asking is all. :)

Same here. I prefer leaving such things to the imagination (like the rest of Owen Lassiter's letter to Bartlet).
I've always wondered. Is that a real tradition -- the out-going President leaving a letter for his successor -- or was that something that The West Wing made up?

It's been on my mind recently, because I wonder what George W. Bush would write in his outgoing letter to President Obama or McCain.

^ Don't know, but you can be sure that the grammar and spelling would have been better in Bartlett's letter. And Bartlett would be less likely to use a crayon ...

If W is going to write such a letter, I'd recommend something along the lines of 'Sorry for leaving the place in such a mess.'

He's telling Santos that no matter how bad he thinks politicians are, the people that vote for or against them are far worse.

As I recall, the general rule around here is stuff is to be spoiler-free up to one year following its release/airing in the US. After that, its fair game.

Since The West Wing ended in 2006, I think we've passed the one year mark.

I could be wrong though.

Cool, I had no idea that was a real tradition. :D

^ In Tomorrow CJ made a lot of fuss about all White House staffers leaving letters to the people who are going to succeed them. Is that a tradition too, or is it just the Presidential letter?

Oh, and this is a good time to ask about the Press Secretary's flack jacket mentioned in Access ;)

With respect to Emh, it absolutely amazes me when I encounter Americans here (TrekBBS and California) who don't know a lot about the Presidency, American history, or government. Granted, I'm not saying I'm some expert, and granted, maybe it was just a bigger deal growing up in D.C. for me, but this is the kind of thing that we learned about all the time as kids, in addition to where the V-P lives, what the National Mall is, why no buildings in the District are taller than the Washington Monument, etc.

Again, not pointing fingers at you Emh, this is just me thinking out loud.
