We Didn't Start the Fire - 20 years on (End of Decade challenge)

Holdfast

Fleet Admiral
Admiral
It's now 20 years since We Didn't Start the Fire was originally released in 1989. 2 extra decades to add to the 4 in the original song.

For some End of Year/Decade amusement, please invent 2 new verses to account for the nineties and noughties. And remember that in the original song, events were listed in chronological order... :p

Or if you haven't the time to arrange events into verses, just list some key events from the past 2 decades, which is what I've lazily done below... ;)

Some that spring to mind for the 90s:

- Iraq War, Internet, Clinton, Greenspan, Stained Dress...

And some for the 00s:

- George Bush, Al Gore, Hanging Chad, Towers Fall...
- Yanks in Afghanistan, Idol in America, Iraq Again
- Columbia, Bush back once again, Friends Ends
- Another Pope, 7/7, Hurricanes, Beijing Games
- Market Crash, Sub-Prime, Swine Flu, Jackson Dead

The original song, for inspiration:

Interested to see what items you choose, and remember, they don't all have to be big SERIOUS NEWS events, softer stuff like TV, movies, etc also count, provided they were big/meaningful to you. :)

PS. this felt more a Misc topic than Gen Media, but mods, do feel free to scoot it over there is you think it's appropriate there.

Also remember that not only were they in chronological order, but, with the exception of the last verse, every two lines covered a single year for every year from about 1949 to 1963, with the final verse summing up everything that happened from 1964 up until the year the original song was written.

The Holdfast version will be quite a challenge. Let's see what we come up with...

IIRC, didn't they make another verse for the 90s and play it for the 99-2000 new year?

Oh and for fun: ;)

Here's one for the 90s. They're generally in chronological order, except where I fudged it a bit to fit the song or rhyme.

Mandela, Kuwait, rainforest burned away
Moscow, no new taxes, Hubble is a go

German reunification, Yugoslavs break up again
World Wide Web, NAFTA, W.T.O.

Rwanda, Towers bombed, Chunnel Open, OJ's On
Serbs attacked, Palestine, shots fired at Columbine

Space station, Lewinsky sucks, Titanic making big bucks
Tiger Woods, Y2K, Wonderbra's a good rise

Replace "I can't take it anymore" at the end of the old last verse with, "Salmon Rushdie, Rob Lowe".

Lip synch, Germans unite, Iraq invades, Hubble flight,
Rodney King, Web starts, Soviets come all apart

Amy Fisher, royal splits, LA riots, Carson quits
Waco burns, Bobbatt trial, Black Hawk Down, X-Files

Kurt Cobain, OJ flees, Tonya's whacking Nancy's knees
Unabomber, Tim McVey, Windows boots and Ellen's gay

Fox News yellow press, Clinton left a dirty dress
Cloned sheep, JonBenet, Columbine and Heaven's Gate

Chorus

Y2K, Bush v Gore, Hainan Island, Monkey Ward
Shit really hits the fan, and now WE'RE in Afghanistan

Chechnya, ice on Mars, Beltway Sniper, fear of SARS
Dixie Chicks, US invades, Columbia disintegrates

World of Warcraft, Reagan's dead, a new Pope, the Euro spreads
Social networks, drama llama, keyboard cat, Barack Obama

Iranians with fissiles, North Korean missiles
subprime crisis, swine flu, what the hell we gonna do?!

Chorus

(Be kind please - it's just a rough layout.)
