Was the Shapeshifter in ST VI a shapeshifter?

Mr. Scott

Commander
Could it be that the Shapeshifter Martia in the Klingon prison in Star Trek VI on of "The Hundred" sent out by the Founders? Or are there other Shapeshifter beings in the Universe?

1) I don't think it could - after all, Martia changed shape without ever going yellow-glowy in between, whereas even the most skilled Founder agents seemed to be forced to do that glowy goo during most transformations.

2) I'm sure there are.

There are more shapeshifters on TNG. "The Dauphin" and there was the shapeshifter that had to absorb organisms to survive on "Aquiel".

Yah, I never got the impression the two were remotely related. Aside from the shapeshifting abilities there is not much of a connection.

I've just noticed the topic title. The obvious answer is yes.

As for the Salt Vampire, wasn't it illusion rather than changes in actual physical appearance? I'm not seen The Man Trap for quite a while.

The Salt Vampire is shown to appear as different things to different people at the same time, so it's more screwing with their heads than actually changing shape.

Through the history of Trek there have been many shapeshifters, all with different ways, I would our friend in VI was a genuine shifter in her own right.

Was the shapeshifter a shapeshifter? Yes.

Also, the Romulan was a Romulan, the BOP was a BOP and Rura Penthe was Rura Penthe.

The Klingon Assasin wasn't a Klingon Assasin though..

And TOS had Lord Garth who wasn't a founder either.

Garth was human. He was given the gift of shapeshifting by aliens.

As for Martia: She said that it took "a lot of effort" to change shape. A Founder, on the other hand, can apparently do it easily (Odo always had trouble mimicking human form, but simply changing shape was pretty much easy peasy lemon squeasy). So that alone would seem to put the lie to their being the same species.
