"Wake" -- my first short film

Good Luck with it all Jackson - your latest project definitely looks grander in scope. Keep it real.

Wow! The film is very nicely done, you should be proud! I loved the start, with Max slowly heading for the camera/funeral notice. There are just enough hints for the audience to work out what story they might be seeing, which I like a lot. The solomn mood is very consistent throughout, and in particular the father reaching out but failing to connect is very resonant with me. The music added appropriate atmosphere as well. Well done on all counts!

The new film looks interesting too. :)

Dan I've already given you my thoughts on the film, tremendous job, and I haven't seen those production pics yet. They're awesome.

Thanks everyone for the positive remarks. I really appreciate them and I'm glad you all have enjoyed the film thus far.

And Adam, those pictures have been on my Facebook since last October!

Great short! Well filmed and acted. You connected well with the emotions of loss and things left unsaid very well. It hit home pretty well, and that's no easy feat! I especially loved the interchanging between Max walking up to the coffin and the discovery of his mother's body. As others have said, it didn't look amateurish, and you got good performances from your actors.

You got yourself a fan here.

And don't worry too much about the sound.

At the risk of sounding like Shia LaBeouf ... no no no no no no no no no no no no no NO!

An audience can forgive weak video, particularly when we're dealing with a 20-year-old director. Weak audio will destroy any project.

As a sound recordist and mixer, believe me, I know. All to well. Most student films are trash for no other reason than bad sound. But I give JacksonArcher a pass because he was working with subpar equipment (and equipment that changed mid-production), and he acknowledged his problems in post-production. This fills me with confidence that he's already fixed these problems on his second film.

There's no point in worrying about the sound in Wake when the film is in the can, locked, and mixed. We don't want another George Lucas on our hands, now. Let it go out into the world, and do better next time. My comment was not intended to inflict apathy towards sound recording and design, which is found all to often in big-budget Hollywood films, let alone student or independent productions.

That is all. :)

Thanks Harvey. I also think a problem might be with Metacafe and the uploading process. I asked people who have seen the film on DVD and they say the sound was just fine. Additionally, I uploaded the film on Facebook, and I didn't get a single complaint about the sound. However, I still stand by the fact that we did have sound problems, which I even notice when I'm seeing the film on a flatscreen TV with big speakers.

Messianni, we shot digitally with Canon. I wanted a filmic look without having to spend the outrageous costs to go with film, so my cinematographer recommended a camera package that he just used on a short he just shot and it worked out really well.

Thank you very much for the kind words, and I'm really glad you enjoyed the piece. However I know this is going to sound pretentious, but I don't want to reveal the "spoiler" since I wanted audiences to figure out that for themselves and let them (you) draw their own conclusions.

I don't have a trailer for my next short yet but I will soon. It's taking me some time to finish that one because of the special effects work required. But it'll be available soon. Thanks for the interest.

And I'll never forget you, exodus. :D

What kind of special effects work? Since thats my thing and all.....

I've seen those production stills somewhere else before but I can't remember where....

Minimal stuff. We're trying to create a post-apocalpytic Chicago so we're just visually augmenting scenes to show off more destruction. More debris, some fire, that sort of stuff.

And I posted images from the film on here before, so that's maybe where you've seen the stills.

Matte paintings then?

You've got access to a Red Camera, JacksonArcher? Sweet Zombie Jesus. Can't wait to see the finished product. :techman:

Haha, thanks. I actually wasn't that impressed with the outcome of the RED camera -- and neither was my DP -- but the image is certainly very, very crisp. I'll admit that.

Interesting. I must admit I haven't seen anything shot with the RED yet, but I had heard good things about it. Have you ever considered moving to 16mm or 35mm film at some point, or are the financial concerns too great? I'd love to see you and your DP work on celluloid. But I suppose I'm getting ahead of you--you haven't even finished your second film yet.
