US Torchwood cancelled for now

Actually Temis when Torchwood were first introduced in season 2 of Doctor Who, they were potrayed mostly as a somewhat sinister organization that sort of used alien technology to further Britain's "empire" (This of course brought the Cybermen and the Daleks to their doorstop and brought the 'main' Torchwood down). So you're kind of right about the whole sinister angle.

However, in the Torchwood series and in season 3 of Doctor Who (Where Jack appeared in the 3-part finale), it's established that Captain Jack wanted to redeem the Torchwood name after the events in season 2 so he patterned his 'team' in honor of the Doctor. Then again the Doctor is often potrayed as not 100% good himself...

As for "Everything changes", I think this was mainly a reference to that in the "Whoniverse" the general public is already fully aware of the existence of aliens (Although no formal treaties have been made-yet-although a phony contact was made in the season 3 finale) and is making the first steps towards full space exploration (as established in The Waters Of Mars). Of course given recent events in the new season (Amy unaware of Daleks when they invaded the Earth in the fourth season finale) this might be undone or something.

Supernatural is about two brothers who travel across the country to hunt and kill evil urban legends creatures, and are involved in the war between Heaven and Hell.

I would question whether or not the heaven vs. hell stuff was really a part of the show's original core concept. It took a long time to develop that way.

Torchwood could easily develop into some long-term war for the survival of humanity. It's just a matter of the writers having that vision.

Of course, I stopped watching the Torchwood pilot because it was too boring (and I'd heard bad reviews of the season). I have watched the latest season (which was amazing), though.

Fox can cancel anything.

Wondering why that volcano in Iceland stopped spewing ash? Fox canceled it.

V's already doing that. Not tremendously well, and it's likely to be cancelled, but it just goes to show that a premise you'd think was a slam-dunk: humanity vs. eeevil aliens! can be screwed up just like anything else can.

It's a fairly common idea. The show will either work or not work depending upon the ability of the creative team. No concept is full-proof.

The Supernatural idea of Angels vs. EEEVil Demons ( ;) ), for instance, hasn't always been a hit run. Legion was a recent movie with that very same idea, and it was panned critically (not that I've gotten a chance to see it).
