Urban outs the villain. Maybe.

According to Karl Urban on the Dredd press junket, Benedict Cumberbatch is

"an exemplary Gary Mitchell."

So, is Urban joking (he's that kind of guy)? or is he loose-lipped and now in trouble with Abrams...

Of course, Orci has previously ruled that character out...

I suspect Urban is winding up the fanbase (of which he's at least as big a member as Simon Pegg), and TBH I still think it'll be a new character...

So.... what was the point in having a comic book with this said character in the first place? I know it's the usual "comics aren't canon", but Bob and Alex have had an active role in keeping the expanded Trek09 universe consistent.

I think he's correct. A good deal of us had guessed this awhile back. And it explains a lot in the leaked fight sequenced.

I call BS on it. Unless they're gonna stand up and laugh at the fans for buying into their "With oversight from Bad Robot and bridging the gap between movies!" Expanded Universe comics.

Despite his apparent 'death' in the comix he could come back. He did become omnipotent, correct? Whose to say his death wasn't only a temporary condition?

Or it could all be some kind of misunderstanding, mistake or misdirection.

did Gary Mitchell die in Star Trek Ongoing or not? So, did he lose his powers and now wants revenge?
because if he still has the power, he is indestructible.

Maybe he meant a new character named Mitchell Gary.

Or Mary Gitchell.

(Hey, Star Trek is about a more progressive future, after all)

Comics are not canon...

Orci said himself the Countdown comics were not canon when we all thought they were.

I'm pretty sure Urban is just being sarcastic. Unlike the others, he's actually watched the show and can make a joke like that.

If Cumberbatch is playing the role, then it makes more sense for him to be playing that character than Khan. Also, Mitchell requires nothing much in the way of backstory for the uninitiated, unlike Khan, who worked in Trek 2 (the real Trek 2!) because his backstory had already been established.

However, I will remain skeptical because like a lot of folks here, I suspect all these villain rumors are part of a carefully orchestrated campaign to keep us wound up.

And in the end, it will be Q. :D

It took five minutes to lay out the character in The Wrath of Khan. Everything you needed to know was presented on what was left of the Botany Bay.

I'm positive the uninitiated had little trouble following TWOK.

So Khan, Mitchell or a new guy, they're still going to spend five to ten minutes on character exposition and motivations.
