Unexpected depth/seriousness in “light” fare

Cheers often did this so well but the episode where Coach’s daughter visited along with her obnoxious fiance and then she and Coach had a heart to heart is a particularly great example. “Mom was not…comfortable about her beauty.”

An episode of Golden Girls where Sophia made a friend who ended up that he had dementia. There was a pretty silly B-plot but the main plot of the episode was unexpectedly serious.

The death of George Sr on Young Sheldon.
The audience had known from the early episodes of The Big Bang Theory that Sheldon's father had passed away at a young age and that the relationship between the two wasn't very good.
Come Young Sheldon and we find out that Sheldon's view of his father had been filtered and that George Sr was actually a kind, loving, supportive father to his family; so, even though we knew the final season would focus on George's death and subsequent fallout and the audience was prepared for it, it still came as a shock and when George's coworkers showed up at the door to say that George had a heart attack and died while coaching the football team, it was still a tearjerker.

Yeah, that was heartbreaking. As for George, I read an interview where one of the producers admitted that they totally changed George's character from what Sheldon described. They said they felt it would be too hard to do the kind of series they wanted to do if George was the alcoholic asshole that Sheldon described on The Big Bang Theory.
And then added even more emotional material to George's death when Georgie dreamed about talking to him again on a recent episode of Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage.

That movie sucks.
