Truly Star Crossed Lovers

...but in the next episode, "Mudd's Women," Harry Mudd didn't seem surprised when he said to Spock, "You're part-Vulcanian, aren't you?" (Which was the first time Spock's species was named, surprisingly enough.)...

Maybe Harry Mudd was physiognomist and able to see the traits of both species in Spock's appearance.

Were Trip and T'Pol realy, truly in Love? They had a mating bond imposed on them for no other reason than due to scratching their itch. But T'Pol could often be dismissive of Trip, as when Surak's writings were published. And Trip would often be dishonest about his feelings, outright lying to her, to not appear weak ... as though he needed their relationship more than she. We wanted them to be "Truly Star Crossed Lovers," but I believe they were just good friends with great benefits.

Even when Elizabeth entered the picture, what's Trip's first reaction? "T'Pol, we're going to discover the truth behind all of this ... together"??? No!!! Whilst he does not accuse her of this outright, he firmly believes - and this is in the final thing - that she's been somehow deceptive regarding having been pregnant, somehow. He quickly realises and accepts that would've been impossible, but his initial feelings are those of distrust. Distrust of the woman he supposedly loves. They did love one another, but it wasn't as strong as their mating bond, itself. It was more loosely woven ...

The writing for this series was pretty uneven. They wanted sex appeal, probably in an attempt to boost the ratings, but I don't think they paid as much attention to why their characters were acting a certain way. Based on what was seen on screen, they were both flawed. T'Pol was an unusually emotional, conflicted Vulcan to begin with and became more so because of the drug addiction and the brain disease. She jerked Trip around in some of those episode, to the point he didn't know what to believe. Trip was vulnerable after the death of his sister and the Xindi attack and the stress of the ongoing war, as well as inexperienced with other species. Then these two troubled people were thrown together because of the Vulcan neuro pressure and the attraction between them led to its inevitable conclusion. Add in the cultural differences and that they were two different species and there's little wonder they had problems communicating. I do think they loved each other and the mating bond likely could not have been formed if they didn't already have strong emotions for one another.

..
T'Pol being dismissive and Trip being dishonest, well sounds like most human marriages lol

Hell ... even when Trip reunited with T'Pol - in which episode was it? the Orion Slave Girl one, I believe - even that was steeped in deception. He lied about T'Pol's sharing in his dreams and then - OK? - THEN he goes ahead and lies to her about the deal he struck with Columbia, some 3 days earlier, to return to Enterprise.

I'm trying to remember ... this was AFTER he had gotten her to tell him that she wanted him back. Which was pretty stupid, actually. What if she gave him the cold shoulder? His return to ship orders would still stand ... and now, he looks like a complete idiot to T'Pol, which would've hurt his chances with her, down the road. He makes all of these decisions based on a purely emotional basis. When he's with T'Pol, though, when they're together, he chooses wisely. His decisions makes sense. Everything adds up. But do we dare to call it ... Love? And you're right, Nyotarules ... Long, Happy Marriages are based on less. So much less.

This aspect of the show would've been so much less awkward, though, had Trip & T'Pol just been in a normal relationship that was threatened from the outside, rather than from them. Like, her betrothal to Koss, for example.

The impression is a V/H couple getting together was rare or they are they first and since they are the first there has to be lots of drama involved. But it came across as two beings with the emotional maturity of high school teenagers. But then such is real life.....

Sounds like a normal relationship to me. Imperfect people getting together for imperfect reasons.

Theirs was hardly a 'normal' relationship! And you know it, well. A Human and an Outer Space alien snogging, for one thing. The results of which were anything but typical. For example, T'Pol's bond with Trip making him immune to pheromones. It's truly making a silk purse out of a sow's ear, by categorising their relationship as 'normal.'

In hindsight of the ST universe two sentient beings getting together is normal. But I get your point since in real life humanity cannot even manage seeing two people of the same race (homo sapien) but with different skin colour snogging....

Humans of different skin colour snogging? What are you talking about? There will probably always be white, black, yellow and red Humans, I seriously doubt that we'll ever lose that variety. But I wasn't referring to anything along those lines, sir ...
