Triton

may i ask why you dislike goanimate?

I think it's so cartoony that it distracts from the stories being told. Just my personal preference. No big deal. But you've got to expect that not everyone will like everything.

I understand. I wasn't sure if it was drag and drop characters or the cartoony quog style that you disliked. If the characters had been made to look exactly like the TAS ones would that have made a difference?

I probably would've watched more. The other problem is that half the time I went to watch one, it had been deleted by its owner or some such. Another thing is that someone was simply redoing the pro-novels as cartoons, and they just didn't appeal to me.

The thing I like about this Triton approach is the character styles are more modern, and I like that a lot. I'm not particularly fond of the animated stylings of Filmation, but I think Farragut's animated episodes are excellent. I also enjoy Curt Danhauser's new animated episodes.

It is almost impossible to keep up with the on again off again listings at Go!Animate. I have all but given up keeping my links to it up-to-date. It is the one part of my website which is, frankly, awful. Solarbaby, is that your new permanent name? Should I change my listing from the work of "Section 31" to the work of "Solarbaby"?

Yes I already replied in a different thread. I'm sticking with Solarbaby. Section31 was a bit too cliche. I've been Solarbaby for over a year on GA.

This isn't finished. It's missing some detailing on the torpedo launchers and the undercarriage of the main hull, as well as has no phaser placements or running lights put in yet, but here's a peek at the Starship Triton...

I figure some people like looking at this kind of stuff rather than characters all the time heheheh. I'll have another character bio up soon.

Cute. At first I thought it was quog style Luna Class. Nice drawing!

It strikes me that it is essentially the Nu JJprise broke up into parts and stuck together much closer. The arrangement doesn't really seem to do anything that the constitution class wouldn't, so I'm not sure why Starfleet would make this class.

I think as a 24th century ship it would make a cool design. Just my thoughts still a nice looking ship

Thanks for all the compliments guys! I've worked really hard on all of this stuff and I'm pretty proud of it.

Interesting design! To me, the characters are more important, but it's nice to see the setting as well.

I agree! In some ways though, the ship kind of feels like a character to me, which is also why I've chosen to present it in the inked and two-toned look that I've developed for the crew, rather than the painted look I'm using for the locations and backgrounds.

I can totally see the Luna class comparison here now that I look at it. When I set out to design this ship I gave myself certain mandates to follow.

1) I wanted it to be contemporary to the new Enterprise, as if they were made with the same materials and used the same technology. Cut from the same cloth.

2) I wanted it to contrast the Enterprise in artistic ways, so that this is clearly not the same ship and nobody would confuse the two on screen.

3) I wanted it to be a smaller ship, to reflect the scale and scope of the project. This isn't a great big hollywood blockbuster, it's a modest little fan film. And the ship sort of serves as a metaphor for that. Also, it's much easier to compose a scene with three or four people on the bridge than it is to have the whole room swirling and full of extras.

There's definitely some influence from the Nebula class, the Excelsior and the Intrepid class in there. All classy "not-the-enterprise" ships.

If you look at the two ships side by side you'll see that they are really quite different. Where the Enterprise has a concave curve, the Triton has a convex. Where the Enterprise Widens, the Triton tapers. It's all done in the same styling and made to compliment/contrast the Enterprise, but it's not a kitbash. As for why Starfleet would make this class? The simplest answer would be that it's smaller and cheaper to build.

OTOH, I'd say this is about damned time!

You have no idea how good it is to hear somebody say that, hahaha!

I particularly like the way you use elements of Chamblin's bridge design to create something on a smaller scale for a different vessel. Very nice.

Yeah, this looks great. It's exactly the sort of thing that I wish CBS was doing. lol.

I'll be eagerly anticipating your updates.

Thanks! I'm thinking I'll probably do a new captain's chair design instead of what I have there, which is just the same chair as the Enterprise bridge. Something with the same styling and flavor.

Heheh, I'm glad to hear it! Here's another character profile:

Leynah.jpg

Like everything else in this thread, this isn't final. The idea for her character is to be the hard ass compliment to the Captain's soft touch. She's very formal and by-the-book. Plus, from a story perspective it's always good to have a vulcan around for those mind-melds or nerve-pinches, haha!

Good stuff so far. :techman:

Thanks! I'm going to do up a quick teaser sequence as a proof of concept and maybe people will be more inclined to help out.

I've been very busy lately, but here's another sketch for the crew.

Heydna.jpg

I haven't got much formatted for his description, (hence the need for writers, hehehe) but I feel like it's important to at least have one really cool alien on the crew to take advantage of the medium. I loved the alien design for the bridge officer on the U.S.S. Kelvin in the film, so I drew this guy up. He's also a bit of a homage to Arex from the original Star Trek animated series.

The obvious role for him to fill is the token outsider to provide perspective and commentary on our silly human ways. I've also thought about flipping it around and having him actually be from Earth, born and raised, and very much a normal guy. That might be interesting...
