TrekLit Goodness in the new issue of STM

JD

Fleet Admiral
Admiral
I just got my new issue of Star Trek Magazine this afternoon, and it's got all sorts of TrekLit goodness inside. In addition to a big Patrick Stewart interview, it's got an article about the Typhon Pact, the Breen with a bit about their appearance in the Typhon Pact books, an interview with our own Mark Rademaker all about his designing of the Aventine, and last but not least an excerpt from Zero Sum Game. This is the most TrekLit content in the magazine in a while, so I'm really looking forward to digging into this one.

ETA: I read the excerpt from ZSG this afternoon, and it was definitely interesting. Especially since it revealed the fates of two of the DS9R regulars (other than Bashir) although it leaves big question about one unanswered.

Ro is now a Captain and in command of DS9, since Vaughn is off on a ship doing an exploration mission. But it doesn't reveal anything about Kira though, and I'm very curious to know what happened to her that Vaughn was in command before Ro.
Is it revealed in ZSG or Rough Beasts of Empire?

I think it was mentioned somewhere earlier on which I can't for the life of me. But I was surprised when I got my copy last night and was amazed as well.

Boy, I hope they don't go the Star Trek Online route. Kai Kira *shudder* :ack:

I hope they won't make Kira Kai i didn't care for that idea at all in the Startrek online game novel.I wish she would stay as a Captain in Starfleet there is alot of untold story potential of having Kira being in Command of Ds9.

Me too. I was thinking it would be cool if maybe she got promoted to admiral.

Seriously! JD, please can you edit the title and let people know there are extreme spoilers in here as having the entire thread in spoiler code will just be silly.

I don't think that JD can edit the title anymore. After a certain time period only the mods can do that IIRC.

ah, pain, well I guess a Mod would have to then.

I started reading the excerpt at the store today, but when I got to..

Captain Ro Laren

..I decided to stop.

I guess I'd just rather wait and get all the changes at once, but I'm a tad dubious about it. Again, I only just read a few lines. We'll see.

Wow! Let's here it for TrekLit authors and their love for female captains! :techman: It's kind of funny that Ro made Captain before Worf though; and DS9 is a hotbed of Command officers between Kira, Dax, Ro, Worf, and Sisko. Though I'm seriously even more curious now about what happened in that in-between time... hopefully Rough Beasts will clear more up and of course actually reading Zero Sum Game might have more tidbits.

damn, i'm still trying to track down a copy of STM.
Worf saves his wife by disobeying orders and he'll never make captain. but they promote a defector and terrorist to captain? whiskey-tango-foxtrot?

once again, Sisko was expressing his OWN OPINION that Worf may not make captain. it was NOT A CERTAINTY.

and, in case you forgot, they already made Chakotay - a terrorist - captain of Voyager.

well, i seemed quite certain in the books....

and, in case you forgot, they already made Chakotay - a terrorist - captain of Voyager.
that they did, you absolutely correct. on the other hand, Chekotay never betrayed starfleet.

Yeah, but Worf did leave Starfleet for 4 years, while Ro was (probably) still in Starfleet that whole time.

But Chakotay DID technically betray starfleet. He did it when he joined the Maquis.

Well, not exactly. Chakotay resigned from Starfleet and then joined the Maquis. That's not the same as what Ro did, which was to act against Starfleet interests while she was still in Starfleet service. Chakotay broke with Starfleet openly, Ro used deception to act against them from within.

I thought Starfleet considered all the Maquis to be terrorists? Even though Chakotay left SF before he joined with the Maquis, they still considered what he did as acting against them. This is why I said "technically"...

But you're right. As far as we know Chakotay never betrayed SF while still being an officer in it...

And...? Kira Nerys was a terrorist too, but Starfleet made her captain of DS9. In real life, Nelson Mandela was a terrorist, but went on to become president of South Africa and a figure of worldwide esteem. Terrorism is a strategy, a situational response, not an ideology or a permanent identity.

But Kira wasn't acting as a terrorist in opposition to the Federation/Starfleet. Bajor was in the cardassian sphere of influence, so Starfleet had no leg to stand on until the Bajorans asked them for help after the cardassian withdrawl. The Maquis was made up of Federation citizens acting against the cardassians in clear defiance of the Federation/Starfleet.

Chakotay was one of many former SF officers in a citizen's militia whose very existance can be attributed to the disagreement they had with the treaty that created the DMZ. A treaty signed by the Federation which they expected their citizens (especially SF officers) to abide by. Chakotay pissed off SF, just as Ro did, albeit in a different manner. Kira never did this.
