TOS sound effects in other shows

I'm rewatching I Dream of Jeannie these days (haven't seen it in 20 years), and I've noticed two TOS sound effects:

The War of the Worlds UFOs also hovered with the TOS phaser sound and fired with the TOS torpedo sound.

What other sounds were used elsewhere? Did the same happen to sounds from TNG-ENT?

The Twilight Zone episode "Elegy" used what would one day be the TOS bridge sound effect. It's heard aboard the astronauts' spacecraft.

Filmation's He-Man and the Masters of the Universe used most of the TOS sound effects. They got them by way of having made Star Trek: The Animated Series the decade prior. Soon after, Transformers did much of the same.

But didn't TAS have a different sound fx library than TOS?

I have the old GNP sound fx CD from TOS, btw. It's pretty cool. Apparently Gene Roddenberry insisted that everything we see, that does something, should make a sound. And he was so right about that.

I think it was the pilot episode of Hawaii 5-0. There was a laboratory with a lot of the background TOS sounds. Then later in the 1st season, Joanne Linville guested as a scientist who developed a medical machine that also made a lot of TOS sounds.

That sound effect is the same or very similar to one used in tons of old shows as the sound of an elevator motor starting.

The war machines have a very similar sound (levitation? propulsion?), but I think the phaser version is sped up.

The plasma bolt sound effect is created the same way as the photon torpedo sound effect, by striking a taut metal wire, but I'm fairly certain it's not the exact same sound clip. The torpedo version has a sharper attack (beginning) and resonates longer. I sometimes wonder if maybe they were two different takes from the same recording session, though it could be they were created separately. (Ben Burtt used the same wire-striking technique to create a blaster sound for Star Wars.)

I believe the hover/phaser sound is actually a recording of a swarm of locusts, played at different pitches/speeds in different uses.

The Martian heat ray sound effect (which IIRC was an electric guitar sound played backward) was often used in Filmation shows, and I'm pretty sure it showed up somewhere in TAS.

Anyway, lots of different shows used the same sound effects back then, from the libraries of the companies that handled their sound editing. TOS's sound design was by Glen Glenn Sound, IIRC, and they did a bunch of different shows. While some TOS sound effects were created for the show (like the transporter), others were pre-existing cues that were rented. I recall hearing parts of the TOS bridge ambience in a Twilight Zone episode predating TOS by several years.

The turbolift door sound is oft-imitated. Some of the times it's been used in non-ST productions (and usually when it is, it's a reference to ST) it's obviously a knock-off, but I think that probably some of the times it's been genuine, but I don't have a list of which ones.

Yeah, I watched The Simpsons the other week, and I think it was a 'fake to deliberately half-mimic' sound. Sometimes it's done slightly OTT for comic effect.

From the same studio as I Dream of Jeannie, on Bewitched, they use the door swoosh sound in an episode where Endora loses her powers (to indicate her attempt to pop out failed).

One of the most unusual occurrences of the photon torpedo sound effect was in Batman's first Joker episode, "The Joker is Wild," where it was used for the giant spring the Joker employed in a jailbreak (at 2:40):

It was a two-part episode (Season 1, episodes 19 and 20) and Joanne Linville played a phony doctor.

"The Fantastic Journey" (which I highly recommend -at least to those who grew up in the seventies) uses quite a bit of TOS sound effects, not surprising, since the late great D.C. Fontana was involved with the production.

That's one of the few '70s sci-fi series I haven't managed to track down for a rewatch.

I watched it in first run on NBC, but my only real memory is the coverage it got in Starlog magazine. Katie Saylor was eye catching in a black mini dress, nylons, and boots. Roddy McDowall's character was introduced wearing a matching metallic gold dress shirt and tie combo, a very different outfit but again not something you forget. Outstanding costume design.

For some reason I'm thinking Bill Theiss was the costume designer, but maybe I'm miss-remembering, I'll have to rewatch it now that this thread has got me thinking about it again.

IMDB says costumes by Grady Hunt. I also noted that one of the guest stars was Cheryl Ladd. Very nice. I hope there's a photo out there. Hey, and now that I'm looking, Joan Collins, Julie Cobb, and Marj Dusay were on that show.
