TNG: Season 4 Review

trekjiro

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
I just got through Season 4 after a break from watching TNG. This is my first time through and will hopefully get to finish off the rest of the seasons this year.

Initial Observations
Again, the writing of the episodes really blew me away. Quite comparable Season to last S3. Many episodes stuck out and few were really sub-par.
I liked many of the shows that brought back a familiar character. Reg, the Traveler, Wesley, Duran, Tomolok, etc.

Faves: The Best of Both Worlds, Reunion, Future Imperfect, Nth Degree, Redemption
Least: The Loss

ST: TNG Season 4

175: The Best of Both Worlds Part 2: A-
Enterprise attempts to rescue Picard from the Borg and save Earth.

176: Suddenly Human: B
Enterprise discovers a training ship full of talarian kids. One is human.

177: Brothers: B+
Data's homing device is activated taking him back to Dr. Soong

178: Family: B+
Picard takes leave on earth and visits his brother/family in France. Worf's parents visit the Enterprise.

179: Remember Me: A-
Beverly gets caught in a Warp Bubble but it appears that everyone else has in her experience. The Traveler guest appears.

180: Legacy: B

Enterprise visits a planet and meets Ishara Yars, Tasha's sister. A story of how easy it is to be deceived.

181: Reunion: A

Klingon leader seeks Picard to take over as his mediator after his death to prevent a civil war. Ambassador Khleer and Duran appear.

182: Future Imperfect: A-

Riker and away team visit gaseous planet and find themselves in the future when he is Captain and a father. Visit by Admiral Tomalok from the Romulans.

183: Final Mission: B+

Wesley's last mission before going to the Academy. He and Picard go to a Mining' planet for an emergency but
crashland on one of the moons.

184: The Loss: C
Troi loses her powers. The Enterprise is being towed away by some mysterious force.

185: Data's Day: B
Data learns and observes humanity through events including O'Brien's wedding to Keiko, meeting an Vulcan Ambassador, learning how to dance with Beverly, etc.

186: The Wounded: B+
A Federation Captain is attacking Cardassian Ships and the Enterprise is ordered to track an honored Captain down.

187: Devil's Due: A-

Ardra, a deity amongst Ventax II seeks to capture Picard's Soul. The acting on this episode between Patrick and the lady Ardra is excellent!

188: Clues: A-

Enterprise goes through wormhole but apparently strange mysteries pop up on the Ship. I think this episode was really excellent
cause of the situation Data was put into and seeing how he had to walk a fine line in following his prime directive as an android.

189: First Contact: A-

A Planet's society is close to Warp Technology. Picard and Troi visit but is missing Riker on the Planet.

190: Galaxy's Child: B

The creator of the Enterprise engines, Dr Leah Brahms visits Geordi. Also the Enterprise encounters a creature 'ship' in space.

191: Night Terrors: B-
Enterprise becomes haunted after it discovers USS Britain with the all the crew killed except a lone betazoid.

192: Identity Crisis: A-
Away team visits a planet where there were missing crew members from another ship. A guest Leutenit and Geordi turn into some kind of alien.

193: The Nth Degree: A
Reg and Jordi take the shuttle to scan a mysterious probe near the Enterprise. Reg seems to have some kind of mental superpowers.
A perfect story for the Reg character. One of the best for Season 4 imo.

194: Qpid: B
Q shows up and tries to repay Picard for getting his life back. This is not one of the better Q episodes but still was good. Vash also appears and surprises Picard.

195: The Drumhead: B

An Enterprise medical technician is interrogated cause he has Romulan blood.

196: Half a Life: B-

Lwaxana Troi visits. A scientist from a new planet is on the Enterprise to try to save his world from their dying sun.

197: The Host: B
A foreign ambassador falls in love with Dr. Crusher. He is a host for some kind of parasite thats supposed to be
a peace negotiator.

198: The Mind's Eye: B+
Geordi is kidnapped by the Romulans and 're-programmed'.

199: In Theory: B-
A member of the crew falls for Data

200: Redemption-Pt One: A-
Klingon leader Gowron visits Enterprise to try to prevent a Civil War in the Klingon Empire.

I would have preferred if you had given your opinion with the grade rather than a synopsis which we all know anyway =S
Oh and "The Loss" rocks!

The Nth Degree is my favorite episode in all of TNG. I am not normally a Reg fan either, but I really liked the concept and execution of the episode.

Wow..of all the episodes. I think its my favorite for S4. The image of him being interfaced with the computer was pretty trippy. I like Reg's character. To see him act 100% opposite himself with the crews reaction made it even more funnier.

Well, for the record, I appreciated the mini synopses. I'm watching Season 4 right now, and so far many of the episodes (I'm on "Galaxy's Child") are just excellent. The current episode is one of my favorites of the season, but I've had the opportunity to take a look over Season 4 with the recent purchase of the DVDs, and I have found that I thoroughly enjoyed "First Contact".

For my money, TNG was at its absolute peak with episodes 185-194. Just a great season in general, though.

"Half A Life". Wow.

What a deep, meaningful episode. Some moments brought me close to tears, when Timicin explains why he must follow tradition, and Lwaxana tearfully tries to make him understand why she thinks it's barbaric. Her performance is wonderful, and Stiers' is equally impeccable. It also brought tears also because I realized this episode aired a few months before Mrs. Roddenberry would lose her beloved husband.

The episode featured some great performances from Stiers and Barrett, but also featured, IMO, Michelle Forbes' best performance on the show almost a year before she became a semi-regular.

That bit where Deanna comforts Lwaxana and tells her she remembers how sad Lwaxana was when Deanna's father died really was moving, wasn't it?
