TNG Romulan Warbird Model Kit Painted

Very much an amateur at this, I started in '91 when I was 12 with the classic AMT Enterprise refit kit, and within a year I’d done a Klingon D7 and bought the three-piece Next Generation “Adversary” set with the Klingon BOP, Ferengi ship and Romulan Warbird.

However because I was 12 I only painted the Enterprise, and made a bad job of it at that. Then a few months back I found the broken 2-piece Warbird remains in my Mum’s loft. It had various cracks and glue blobs on it, and I thought I’d give it a go.

I’ve always liked the design of the Warbird but found the paint scheme – er, green – pretty dull. So I thought I’d make it a bit more interesting. After I’d done some amateur sanding and filling, I gave it some Tamiya grey primer spray, and then a couple of coats of Tamiya Racing Green spray.

If I’m honest, the Racing Green turned out to be a bit darker than I thought, but I couldn’t be arsed changing it.

There’s a fair few greebles and whatnot on the inside, and I thought a copper paint would bring them out nicely. I also used copper on some of the outer hull details.

What I really wanted was to bring some of the detail out on the wings, like the Klingon Bird of Prey markings, so I did what I’m sure is a very amateur red/brown paint job on parts of the the interior and exterior wings, and I have to say I think it looks better with this livery.

I used a dark grey for some detailing on the ‘head’ and rear sections, which came out kind of purple, but which looks quite nice.

Anyway – as there don’t seem to be many variations on the original paint scheme out there I thought this may be of interest.

The similar aesthetic also fits in with the idea that the Klingon BoP was originally a Romulan ship stolen by the Klingons.
