Time for a Cybermen redesign?

Say what one will about the old costumes, I think the voices of the B & W Cybermen were creepier. Of course, once they went into color, that pretty much changed and they were mostly given deeper voices that sounded more like Darth Vader.

I'll give The Tenth Planet credit where it's due -- the original Cyberman voice was creepy as all hell, and none of the Cybermen voices in nuWho have yet matched it.

I like that voice too, but the one from TotC creeps me out the most. So emotionless. The way they say, "You belong to us. You will become like us" is just horrifying.

I definitely want a redesign as well as the return of Mondasian Cybermen. I want a design that shows people have been converted into Cybermen instead of having their brains scooped into a clunky machine.

Me too!

Nick Briggs talked in a recent DWM about how he wanted to do something like that, but Graeme Harper wouldn't go for it.

I guess thats the one aspect of the classic Cybermen I prefer, the inclusion of bits of plastic and flexible tubing as well as metal, so you could believe they were semi organic (the early Troughton ones in particular, they always made me think of walking body bags. Unzip one and God knows what would come flopping out). The new ones just look and act too robotic to me, more C3PO than half organic lifeforms. The flared cuffs, shoulders, and sleeves don't help either.

Oh, and I'd love to see the annoying clanging sound when they walk go away too.

Yeah the pleated trouser look legs and comfortable shoes look odd as well, their top halves are better but like you say, the appearance of being part man part life support system is sorely missed.

This, 100%. That's why I love The Tenth Planet version of the Cybermen. They look like spare parts (to borrow a phrase) were assembled on themselves and came right off the operating table.

I wonder if they would address the "aversion" to gold if the Mondasians return.

I hope not. It got to be a bit on the ridiculous side when it came to that "weakness" in the first run of the show.

If they really feel that they must reference it, I would like to see something like...

The Doctor or a companion try stuffing gold pieces or dust into a part of the Cybermen and they just spit it back at them.
Then all of the Cybermen have a good laugh.

I know there's kind of a who copied who when it comes to the cybers and the Borg, but really, the way I'd want them to be portrayed would veer dangerously close to Borg territory, so might as well leave them as they are.

Cybermen laughing in any "voice" would be disturbing.

More likely, the Cyberman would just grab the Doc by the throat.

Yeah, I should have said that they have a metaphorical laugh.

The gold weakness actually appears only in three Cybermen stories-Revenge of the Cybermen, Earthshock and Silver Nemesis. In ROTC and Earthshock it's dealt with OK-the dust screws up their breathing apparatus and basically needs to be crunched up and really put in there (Like Adric's star). Even then, the Cyberleader still took a while to go down. However Silver Nemesis had them practically allergic to gold.

It's implied there is some kind of electrolosys or other unknown 'plating' mechanism going on.

It's still a pretty weak idea though..

Originally gold dust clogged up their breathing mechenisms and they choked to death. I don't know what the hell the writers were doing from Earthshock onwards.

Before that I believe they were vulnerable to heavy doses of radiation and conventional heavy weapons.

I'll see your comment and raise it to "none of the Cybermen voices in any Who have yet matched it". :techman:

But why'd it have to be gold to clog it up? It is a bit silly, but then many Who foes have daft weaknesses (take the Sontarans!

Completely agreed. :techman:

Anyway, that's already happened, because the Cybermen in The Pandorica Opens are apparently supposed to be the original Cybermen, not the alternate universe version (so I understand), so the redesign has already happened - the originals have been redesigned as the Cybus versions.

Completely disagreed. Nowhere in that episode, or in Doctor Who at all, does it say anything about the Cybusmen that appeared being Mondasians. If it's not on the screen, it doesn't exist...

Let me wheel this old pic out one more time as my personal choice on how I would like to see the Mondasian's Cybes appear...
