Spoilers The Walking Dead - Season 9 discussion and spoilers

Disappointing, but not unexpected. Only recently I was thinking about her movie career taking off now that she's involved with the MCU and has been cast in the Godzilla vs King Kong and was up for the fourth Kelvin Trek movie before that went tits up and wondered how long it would be before she left Walking Dead.

Its almost guaranteed to be a sad exit (but not necessarily death), but Gurira leaving is not a surprise; it would have been if she left back in season 4 or 5 (similar to George Clooney leaving ER in that series' fifth season), but she's been a longtime anchor, so a career choice of this kind is to be expected.

So what happens the kids? Do they leave with her? I mean are she and Rick going to be happily reunited in the movies and they pretend they don't have kids out their! Also is their any chance Maggie is coming back? I haven't followed that story. IS her new show doing well? She would I think replace Micheonne presence a little.

Her new show hasn't started yet. Rumors are that TWD would take her back if that is what she desired.

Well, damn. :(

Good luck to her, though. I'm glad she's having a successful career. I didn't even know she was in the Marvel movies.

There are rumours of a Maggie spin-off, but I'm not holding my breath. Even if that happens (and I do stress if) we'd likely be waiting a while for it, as such a show is at this moment just in the very earliest of discussions.

The sensible assumption would be that they leave with their mother and...

I mean are she and Rick going to be happily reunited in the movies

Again, that would be the sensible assumption. That after 5 years of thinking Rick was dead, she-and the kids will finally have as close to a "Happily ever after" as any family could ask for in the zombie apocalypse.

I'm not sure about Cohan's show, but as far as Maggie's concerned, she was left off being as cold a judge as Negan, with the execution of Gregory. I'm not sure where her character would go, but I would hope she is not sent on the Shane path of never realizing your ends-justifies-the-means / I-owe-myself-something worldview is personally destructive. She needs to openly admit that she's consciously flushed the lessons from her father down the toilet all for being in a constant state of revenge.

Her new show, Whiskey Cavalier starts on the 27th, I'm actually looking forward to it, it looks like a lot of fun.

The Walking Dead
Season 9 / episode 9 - "Adaptation" - Mid-season premiere

New for the series: a character (Michonne) narrates the recap of recent events.

Michonne & Daryl: Michonne thanked him for something "after" Rick's "death." The answer could go in several directions, but I would think it has something to do with the "X:" branding suffered by both.

Judith:
She's so mature / world-wise for her age, but it was not enough to keep Negan from playing her.
..and to quote Negan--"damn!" at her shooting him off of the bike.

"Language! I'm a kid, asshole!" Priceless.

Magna / Connie / Kelly / Yumiko and Luke: Luke and Alden captured. I just hope all of the singing conversation is not used to punctuate another lost future for one of the men.

Rosita and Father Gabriel: Eugene's crush on Rosita just took a dive with her pregnancy reveal--unless he's going to offer up his services as a surrogate dad / doormat. Now, the question is how is Father Gabriel going to take it? Yes, she said it happened with Siddiq before she became Gabriel's girlfriend, but still...

It will be interesting to see how she handles this--will she be all for it like Maggie, or....

Negan: He seems so attached to Judith. As I imagined, he would want to return to the ASZ,only I see a twisted version of Carl's dream where Negan won't be reformed, but trying make Judith "his own" (parental figure against her own mother) in the way he failed to do with Carl.

Yeah, his "getting back into the swing of things" (no pun intended) by beating walker heads was an expected, but good tease of his return to form.

The Whisperers: Unlike the lead-up to the Saviors, which was a series of attacks from essentially faceless assailants, I'm glad the Whisperers, or their walker camouflage was discovered early, so the plot does not drag through another 3 - 4 episodes of a discovery period.

Lydia--the captured Whisperer's "walls don't make you safe..." Sigh.
So, instead of Carl (as in the comics), Henry will form some kind of relationship with her--until she introduces him to something pretty twisted, if it follows the comics to any degree. With Alpha being her mother and Carol acting as Henry's, I see a "war of mothers" being a centerpiece of this--or next season, if the showrunners see the potential in that.

NOTES: Fast-moving episode.

The mid-season finale teaser did not hide the funeral of Paul "Jesus" Monroe, but seeing the others carry his corpse back was an effectively sad reminder of what happened.

Wild dogs should have more appearances on TWD; not since the start of 5B have we seen a good pack running around and of all social, predatory animal groups, longevity in a post-apocalyptic world would be on their side.

.

Well we know who Hilltop needs to lead them...Judith 'f'n' Grimes, lol

I went through the season on my DVR this past week without any spoilers and teasers except for the damned "THIS IS RICK GRIMES LAST EPISODE" every ad break even with commercial skip I couldn't avoid that. I guess after all the people that cried about the Glenn cliffhanger they had to make sure not to go there. However, the time jump was a surprise for sure.

Wonder if Negan had stashed some guns and ammo with that motorcycle if the story would play out the same way. There's seems to be very few rounds left anymore after they spent thousands of rounds on Sanctuary last season.

They cheated us from seeing Jesus come back from the dead...

The irony of that scene is that her daddy had to take three colonies to war to capture Negan the first time. How badass will Judith look when she strolls back home with ASZ's Most Wanted following obediantly behind her?

Agreed.

I actually found watching that kind of cathartic.

Judith was great. I do query whether a child that small would be hefting a hand cannon like that with any kind of accuracy (or even being able to hold it and aim) but she is cool. Negan's little jaunt was interesting, and not what you might have expected, which is good. Question is, is returning to Alexandria a sign of contrition and growth on Negan's part, or is he looking at it from the angle of it being the location he might reform his empire from? I'd like to think the former, but any hope of redemption would have to come along with one hell of a heroic act for any of the adults to remotely trust him. If he is bound for some kind of face turn they are at least taking their time with it.

Much like the Saviours the Whisperers seemed terrifying the first time you encounter them, then seem less so in the next time they turn up.

Anyone else think Daryl left Henry down there on purpose, precisely so he could befriend Lydia? (and is Henry a patsy or is he in on it?)

Since Daryl was listening to them talk, it was obviously Daryl's hope that they would start to develop a rapport.

As to whether Henry is "in on it," at this point I doubt it, since Henry was just finishing out his sentence. But later on, he might be, for example, if he agrees to pretend to be a prisoner with a longer sentence. But we shall see.

5.16 million for The Walking Dead. Slight uptick from the 5.09 fall finale. This is with the early release (and inevitable leak) online. Having said that, it's still the lowest midseason premiere for the show and would have been the 3rd lowest episode ever if not for the lows of earlier season 9. Still HUGE numbers, but this show would probably have been in the list of top shows of all time if it ended at it's peak...

There are two lines of fan thinking about it: as you point out, Negan could be pretending to surrender himself with the aim of turning ASZ into the Savior compound 2.0, while others think the showrunners will not crap on Carl's dream (the scene of Judith and Negan in the garden) all to return to evil Negan, and as a result, erase Judith's growing wisdom by trusting Negan instead of executing him.

Perhaps the middle ground is Negan will try to take over ASZ / join the Whisperers, but end up having to fight them, only to die during the conflict. Who knows?

Henry is taking the place of comic-book Carl, that latter getting into a romantic relationship with Lydia (and learning just how astoundingly immoral the Whisperers are), but I think his relationship might be organic, rather than a plan from Daryl. Daryl's loyalty to/care for Carl is the reason he's such a "jail warden" to Henry.

Well, this felt like a low-key episode, although we did have a couple of interesting developments.

Negan, now free, wandered boldly around Alexandria, eating other people's fruit and sneaking into their houses. He stole Judith's watch and a shovel and was about to jump the wall when Judith stopped him at gunpoint. She ended up letting him go, but once he made it back to the abandoned Sanctuary he was unhappy with what he found and, after killing a few Walkers decided to just go back to his cell at Alexandria. Why? Is it really because the world he knew is gone? Has he become accustomed to his safe little underground haven where all his meals are brought to him? Or is he scheming? Time will tell. Also, I thought there were still some ex-Saviors at the Sanctuary-- or was that just before the time jump?

Back at the Hilltop, Micchone and Daryl returned with Jesus' body and the lone surviving Whisperer. She was apparently so fearful that she was unable to give coherent answers. They threw her in the cell next to Henry, who was very upset with Daryl for being so hard on the poor young girl-- but he was just setting things up so that Henry would be the unwitting good cop, as he listened outside the window. But, again, are things what they appear to be? The girl's behavior is at odds with what we've seen of the Whisperers so far-- and what we see at the end of the episode-- so I'm inclined to distrust her.

So first we have the Whisperers in the cemetery, who attacked our people and killed Jesus, and then track them and try to kill them again on the bridge. Then we have a group of Whisperers who set a trap for Alden and the Music Man and capture them at the end of the episode. I don't think the Whisperers are just pathetic ragamuffins trying to survive in a world gone mad.

And in Soap Opera news: Rosita is pregnant. Gabriel is not the father. The doctor is. And Eugene is now feeling doubly left out.
