Had I the moolah, I’d cut this and a Venator up to make a Planet of the Titans Enterprise….the Venators longer than normal, nacelle like nozzles on the front of these…

That FE Enterprise appears to be a Polar Lights kit built by someone... It's nothing that a decent modeler couldn't do themselves (and based on some visible issues - could do better).

Made an interesting discovery. What I long thought was a blatant flaw in a kit was a bit closer to the source material than I realized, exaggerated to be sure, but the detail did exist.

During the weekend I pulled out a kit I bought several years ago and simply stashed away, forgetting about it. It was a Revell reissue of the "Creature from the Black Lagoon" originally made and sold by Aurora. The head for the Creature is composed of 3 pieces, a front and back half that sandwich a middle "gill" piece. When assembled and the bottom points of the pieces align, there's a kind of raised "crest" atop the scalp of the monster. One modeler on YouTube jokingly compared it to a Klingon type ridge. I figured it was initially clumsy aligning on my part, but if I fought with the top regions to align, everything else was out of alignment, only far worse. I remember this detail when I first built a kit around 1973, 74 and just assumed it was a feature the costume had. But in the years since, the various photos I saw showed the gill man to have a smooth pate. Why did Aurora cast the pieces like that?

However, while watching a YouTube video hoping to see how a builder resolved that "problem", he revealed something very interesting. He too thought it was an error, but a commenter noted that the headpiece in "Return of the Creature" did indeed have such a crest! The modeler reasoned the sculptor(s) at Aurora based the kit more upon the first sequel. Okay, that made sense. But here's the real punchline. The original mask, the one Millicent Patrick designed for "...the Black Lagoon" also had that crest! It was just a lot more shallow (like only a few millimeters), but the curvature matched that of the costume piece in the second movie and the model kit! One merely needs to sand it down (considerably), but not struggle to eliminate it completely. Funny thing is, a lot of products nowadays omit the crest that actually should be present.
