Spoilers The Orville: New Horizons Season 3 Discussion

Another fantastic episode. And Klyden is back, as I anticipated a few weeks ago!

I will really miss this series, especially if there is no season 4.

Something about the all female Moclan colony made me think of something. Can Moclan women lay eggs like men to create new children? I do forget some of the details from the season 1 episode but I recall Bortus laying a egg and then having to sit on it to keep it warm. Has it been established that female Moclans can lay eggs as well?
Nothing has been established yet and I was wondering the same.

I forget: what is the reason exactly why the Union needed Moclus? They mention they need weapons to help fight the Kaylons. But does Moclus have some unique resource that is used to make a certain weapon, or is Moclus really good at building weapons?
Apparently they are the best at designing weapons.

OK, the best episode of an science fiction series this year.

There were flaws, many of which were smoothed out by the longer length. Seth MacFarlane is light in acting chops, and his responses to Haveena seem tepid when confronting her about manipulating Topah.

The guest actors were all fantastic. Rena Owen was a treat, especially so during the cameo, but in all her scenes as well. Pullum did a great job with difficult scenes. I have not generally been impressed with Peter Macon, but he did some great emotional work through the constraints of his character.

As much as I disliked that Klyden was dismisses so quickly a couple episodes ago, bringing him back was too quick as well. Chad Coleman plays a heavy well, and the show can use more of him.

Bortus laid the egg, but Klyden was the one born female. That, at least, leans towards the males being the egg layers.

I assume Moclus having their own fleet as opposed to Moclans serving in the union is one of the many compromises they've made along the way to keep Moclus in the Union.Have they ever offered any explanation as to why Bortas joined the Union Fleet and not the Moclan fleet? I don't think they have, and if they haven't that's a story I'd be willing to buy in book form like the unproduced episode they released in book form this season.

were you this impotent before they cut off your kla'fash?

If boy and girl Mochlan's have cloaca, instead of a penis and vagina to differentiate the cis gender, then boy and girl gender, no matter their outward appearance, still have identical genitalia, and gender does not effect their ability to procreate.

Their definition of gender is probably based on hormones considering the difference in appearance/size?

But Klyden has a male body now. His female traits were changed at birth through surgery though I am not sure if he is going through the same issues of identity that Topa was. Perhaps something worth exploring next season if the show gets a next season. We haven't fully explored what this means for Klyden also being born female.

Also the idea Moclans even have females from what I recall was a secret so most Moclans don't or didn't even know it was possible yet they still were having children. Though in retrospect the ability to keep something like that a secret seems impossible. So does that mean Moclans born male who married other males were not able to produce children. If so that would I imagine create a medical mystery for that society that I am guessing only people in power new as to why.

The other issue is how many females to males are in this society. on Earth we have like a 50 50 split but I wonder if that is the case with them.

Well,

Orville 1/Trek 0

Orville take this round. All these years of Jazz clubs, Irish pubs, Vegas Showrooms, Shakespeare plays, Beowulf, Sherlock Holmes mysteries, Captain Proton and God damn Flopper. And yet no one every once thought to make a Holo-Dolly?

I demand that an EMP (Emergency Musical Dolly) be installed on all Starfleet vessels, stations and outposts Immediately!!

Or it just means Union planets have their own militaries with the Union Fleet being a Federal service that anyone in the Union can serve in.
Have they ever offered any explanation as to why Bortas joined the Union Fleet and not the Moclan fleet?
In the season 2 episode Deflectors Bortus says he started his career in the Moclan Fleet, meaning he transferred over to the Union Fleet at some point later on. But no, an explanation for that has never been given but presumably it was related to either he saw better advancement opportunities in the Union Fleet than in the Moclan Fleet, or maybe headhunters in the Union Fleet took notice of him for whatever reason and recruited him. Regardless, I doubt there's much of a story to tell there beyond career advancement.

For a series called New Horizons we haven’t actually seen much that is new this season. :)
It's called New Horizons because the studio recommended that since the show moved to Hulu, that it get a fresh, new name and so it became "The Orville: New Horizons," much like "Seaquest" became "Seaquest: 2032."

They also changed the intro to have a more subdued, softer sound. I rather like it myself.

This was a really powerful episode. My only objection was that it was far too easy for everyone in the Union to just see Topa and immediately vote against the Moclans. The terms of the agreement were violated and the Moclans were full Union members. I am not saying that it was the wrong decision, but we've seen a Union this season that is far too smug with itself while overlooking its own shortcomings. I know that the story had to be resolved within the episode to make it work, but I would rather have seen the Union go back to the negotiating table and have the Moclans choose to withdraw their membership.

But that would defeat the point of the ending. That some injustices are to much and people can go to far that compromise can no longer be tolerated. The fact that the Union has been tolerating this and putting up with their bullshit as they put it already has established they have been more than patient with them and at some point enough is enough.

I do think it should have been established that Hevenna can no longer be in a leadership position. She put a young child in danger and frankly the whole galaxy without telling anyone. You can never really trust her anymore if your The Union that she won't be lying to you if her cause comes first.

I will say the writing is much better this season and with Seth taking a back seat, I am enjoying this season. It does still FEEL like a high budget TNG fan film.........Dolly was fun......I think the musical number was a bit over the top.......she does have a new album out.

I agree with you. I just thinking it happened too quickly--in reality, there would have been a larger investigation into the matter.

The song was from an album from 2014.

I would really like to know what the female / male ratio is in the Moclans. 1/1,000,000? 1/1,000,000,000? Because they needed to be so few so that it was easy to hide their existence from the rest of the society.
